Capcom Sues Tecmo Koei for Patent Infringement
According to a report by Sankei Capcom are suing Koei Tecmo Games for patent infringement in games such as Samurai Warriors: Xtreme Legends and 49 other titles for a total of about 980 million yen.
Alleged infringements include a number of functions found within the 50 titles, including the ability to import content from an old title to a new one, disc-based expansions of games, and controller vibrations to warn when enemies are nearby. Although the full content of the p[atent in question is unclear.
Capcom are claiming that the games in question have been responsible for sales in the region of 9.73 billion Yen and are asking for 5 to 10% in licence fees.
This comes not long after Capcom spend large amounts on two new research and development facilities in Japan, and revealed that the shareholders have not elected to continue previously enacted anti-takeover protections. Resulting in the company being open to being acquired in a hostile takeover by any third party who managed to collect enough shares together.
Not that we are saying any conclusions should be drawn from the coincidence of the two events...
