'Bring Postal to the Dreamcast' Says Game's Creator as Code Goes Open Source

For those of us who have been gaming a while now, it's a sign of our age that controversial shooter Postal is turning 20 in 1997. The Robotron inspired game was a huge hit, not hindered by many countries banning the game and carious commentators citing it as an example of videogame violence taken to the extreme. Whatever your feelings on the divisive title, nobody can dispute the immense success of the game, and developer Running With Scissors are aiming to give back to the community that gave them said success by releasing the source code to their debut title.

In a press release, Running With Scissors told us: "It's definitely been a wild ride for us all, and Postal means a lot to us - it's our baby... But now we're ready to hand the future of 'the little shooter that could' to the public at large. People have been asking, and we have been promising this for years now, but today we are proud to announce that the source code for Postal is officially released to the public on Bitbucket, under the GPL2 license. Everyone now has 'under the hood' access, to see what makes Postal tick, and anyone with the time and skills can now tweak/change/update/modify anything in the game at all! And hey, if anyone feels the urge to port the game to other platforms (The Dreamcast, for example *wink* *wink*), then they absolutely can!

This has been a long time coming, and we are tickled pink to see what the community will be able to put together from this (no seriously, someone get on that Dreamcast port. (We're not joking.)"

With the release of POSTAL Redux in 2016 for PC, and an upcoming PS4 port expected next year, this move is one that will see a bit more publicity for the studio's sole franchise. If you're keen to tinker with the code, it's available now on bitbucket
