Blizzard Sues Over Starcraft II Hacks
Blizzard has brought the big guns to its fight against hackers and moved to sue the makers of the ValiantChaos MapHack cheat.
The Starcraft II hack is available for a "donation" of $62.50 and has allegedly made a profit in the tens of thousands for the hackers, who are still anonymous. MapHack gives cheaters a range of hacks to give them the upper hand against regular players, including the ability to give themselves achievements and see other players' clicks and selections for the entire game.
MapHack has ruined the game for honest players according to Blizzard's lawsuit, and infringed on the company's copyright by encouraging and aiding players to break their contract with the company. Blizzard does not seem overly concerned with the monetary profits, which don't seem to figure into its complaint to a California federal court earlier this week.
As a studio focused on MMOs, Blizzard has had more than its fair share of trouble with hackers, bots and generally dishonest behavior and it appears the company is interested in taking a much harsher stance on the issue. Hacking isn't just an issue faced by Blizzard, however, and other studios like Titanfall developer Respawn have chosen more creative responses.
