Alpha Protocol is Being Rereleased on GOG

GOG is continuing its quest to preserve games for future generations to enjoy, without any pesky DRM, and it looks like Alpha Protocol is its latest revival, coming out rather soon (probably right about now).

This cult-classic spy-themed RPG — developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Sega — that originally released in 2010 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Alpha Protocol puts you into the shoes of Agent Michael Thorton as he tries to stop the whole world from descending into chaos from the shadows. Expect to be betrayed, as trust is a luxury few spies can afford.

What’s best known about this game is how much the story can change depending on your actions. It isn’t like most games where all paths lead to the same ending or having “good” or “evil” options, but completely different missions and events that can become available or locked permanently depending on your choices, which can make you feel as though you’re playing an entirely different game with each playthrough. It also gives you a lot of freedom in how you play Mike through its upgrades and perk systems, either turning him into a one man army or a stealth expert who can go through entire levels unseen and with no body count. Solid Snake, eat your heart out.

Back in the day, it was praised for its truly branching storyline, but didn’t quite make up for its other failings such, as its gameplay and general lack of polish. It was actually taken off of Steam in 2019 due the expiry of its music licenses. Now it's coming back on sale with whole host of improvements such as:

  • A licensed soundtrack
  • Achievements
  • Full modern controller support (Dualsense, DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One controllers)
  • Localization support
  • Compatibility with modern operating systems
  • Improved performance
  • Cloud saves support

If you want our thoughts on the game, check out the review and the So I Tried… we’ve done in the past. You can pick up this new version of Alpha Protocol on the 20th of March 2024 at 3 PM GMT.
