A New Outlast Title in the Works
Red Barrels has announced that a new Outlast title is in the works, and while it’s not a direct follow-up to the previous titles it’s still set in the same universe, taking place during the Cold War era.
This new project is titled The Outlast Trials, and in a departure from the series’ single-player norm it will be playable either solo or with up to four-players in co-op. David Chateauneuf (Red Barrels co-founder) stated that the team is “hard at work creating a new experience that will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players, whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends.”
Outlast originally released in 2013, and had players controlling a reporter as he explores an abandoned insane asylum to find out its secrets. The first-person horror game was met with positive critical reception, with many praising its intense scares and hide-and-seek gameplay, which has players avoiding enemies and monsters as opposed to fighting them. The title was followed by Outlast 2 in 2017, which also received similar critical praise.
The Outlast Trials doesn’t currently have a scheduled release date.
