Super Stickman Golf 2 Review
Super Stickman Golf 2 is an excellent example of the correct way to put a twist on a familiar genre when transferring it over to a mobile device. Cleverly transplanting the golf sim to a 2D perspective, the game plays out with as much in common with puzzle games and 2D platformers as it does with golf, resulting in a game that is by no means just for the golf fan.
The basic gameplay is much as you would expect, a simple system of choosing the angle at which to strike your ball and then stopping a power meter at the optimum time to hit it just as far as you would like. Since you only have two dimensions to worry about, you’ll start to get a feel for placing the ball exactly where you want it much quicker than in 3D golf games. This could prove problematic for the longevity of the game, but Super Stickman Golf 2 has plenty of other tricks with which to test players.
After a couple of traditional courses to ease the player in, the third course of the game introduces the first of several twists on the landscape of the golf course - sticky surfaces that your ball will adhere to upon contact. This can lead to your golfer taking shots whilst stood perpendicular to the ground or even on the roof, and completely changes the way that you approach your shots.
Sticky surfaces are not the only twist that the game has to offer, with everything from ice to portals increasing the difficulty over later levels. The game constantly introduces new elements that keep each course fresh and challenging. The courses are all intricately designed, making full use of the verticality that being a 2D game permits as well as all the various obstacles put between the player and the green.
Whilst there is considerable replay value to be had in simply going through the individual courses to see how well you can do, Super Stickman Golf 2 is packed with additional content. Each course has dollar bills which players can collect, some of which are hidden away in rather head-scratching places on the course. This cash can then be used in the game’s hat lottery, a system for unlocking hats which give the player special attributes that is more than a little bit reminiscent of the trophy lottery from Super Smash Bros. Melee. There is also a range of multiplayer options, including turn-based and race online multiplayer variants.
Super Stickman Golf 2 is absolutely packed to the gills with content, and as a game it is perfectly suited to either short bursts of play or longer sessions. It is an ideal mobile game, scratching the same sort of problem-solving itch as a puzzle game whilst still having the appeal of constantly being able to improve on your best scores. Whether you’re a golf fan or not, Super Stickman Golf 2 is a near essential purchase for any iOS gamer.
