Rookfall Mobile Review

Rookfall is something special, this tough puzzle game is super addicting and will leave you wanting to play more and more. It has an interesting concept,t he chess piece that is the “rook” gets its own game. Rookfall went for something different and really hit the mark.

What exactly is Rookfall? Well, it’s a simplistic puzzle game where you swipe the rook piece across the board attempting to eliminate all the floor pieces. The game comes with three different modes: 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7. And quite frankly 5x5 is hard enough. After you learn how to play the game and get a good understanding of the movement and gameplay, the levels get significantly more difficult. As you swipe through the paths you need to remember you can’t stop unless you hit a fallen rook or the end of the board. The fallen rooks serve as a blockade, put there to make you either work around them or use them to your ultimate advantage. They aren't hard to miss either. The fallen rooks have the same look and shape as your rook piece but are a bright red color and lying vertically on their side. As the levels progress they consistently begin to get harder and harder. The fallen rooks become randomly placed throughout the board making you maneuver your way around them. Once you get around level 12 is when you really begin to have to start thinking. You can’t just swipe away and get lucky to advance to the next level. Each swipe and move you make will need to planned and precise to advance to further stages.

Some people may be better than others at puzzle games, but do you have what it takes to move on to 6x6 and 7x7? These options are more difficult and expand the boards. The 7x7 board is a true challenge for anyone who loves a tough puzzle game. The bigger boards also come with more options to move making it even harder for you to solve the puzzle. There are many more tiles to move to and different directions to swipe. With each level beaten you earn a heart. Hearts are used to change the appearance of your rook. The more hearts you have will change the color of your rook. There are plenty of hearts to be earned as well. There are 300 different puzzles to be beaten, 100 in each of the board sizes.

Rookfall is not a bad looking game either. It was made with Unity software and looks phenomenal. It is mainly a black and white game to signify chess, but has a bright color palette as well. The fallen rooks and hearts are a distinct red on the black and white background and after each swipe the black and white turns rainbow and falls off the board. The game animations run smoothly and have no lag or choppy tendencies at all. It has not crashed or frozen once.

Generally, Rookfall is a great game. It’s a fun time for anyone that’s a fan of puzzle games, and has very little design flaws or issues. However, it does get rather difficult, so casual puzzle players may get a little frustrated. In the end, Rookfall is astounding for the hardcore puzzle fans. For players who aren't much into puzzle games this one may not be for you.
