How much leeway am I willing to give a game from smaller developers?

What I mean is this: when a game does not have an AAA developer and publisher, how much will I forgive bugs and other issues? For instance, while Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader mostly runs fine, it is frequently troubled by overlong loading sequences, and I have had more than a few crashes. It’s nothing game-breaking, but it is annoying. Now, if this were a AAA game from EA or Microsoft, this would be, and often is, unforgivable. However, smaller developer teams mean less time and often less ability to troubleshoot.

Now, leeway does not mean forgiving, and it doesn't mean I don’t expect developers to improve. For instance, Spiders’ game Bound by Flame was bad for several reasons: the plot was odd, and the gameplay was lacking and visually boring. However, the developer improved massively with its release of GreedFall. The game still had issues, but the obvious improvement made these less glaring. If Spiders had made no improvements and were willing to release games with the same issues then I would be far harsher, I think.

I also want to say that "small developer" is relative; for instance, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s team is not tiny by any means, but they aren’t AAA either. A game by a single person or small team deserves more leeway than any other type, but how much is still in debate? After all, Undertale was made by a single person, and it runs perfectly with next to no bugs that I know of. As such, do I hold all games to the same standard?

This is honestly a very tough question to answer, and it does kind of come to a case-by-case standard. For instance, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s developer, Owlcat Games, is known to make buggy but good games. Is this something that should be allowed? Or should we expect better from them now that we know they can make good games?

Gameplay is tricky to quantify, especially in terms of how good it is, and it can often be a personal thing. It is entirely possible to make interesting games with even a small team — once again look at Undertale, and having a larger developer doesn’t mean a game will be good or even functional. However, the more complex a game, the more work it will require, and if the gameplay is bad, then it will be unplayable. Therein lies one of the major issues with this question. Some things are just unforgivable, and no amount of leeway will solve a broken game.

The issue is more than just gameplay; it has to do with graphics and plot, too. First and foremost, graphics aren’t that important, really, but when they are bad, it is noticeable. While not aiming to have lifelike graphics is fine, and even attempting might be commendable, it still has an effect, and I don’t want to spend money on something that was a good attempt but still not at the right quality.

When it comes to plot, I am much less forgiving because a good plot doesn’t require money. Writing is, at its core, free, and a good idea costs nothing. Look at a game like The Stanley Parable; it was interesting with a great story but was developed by two guys. So when it comes to story, I don’t give any leeway at all depending on the size of the developers.

This is a question that might be more prudent as we head into 2024, especially with recent flops like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. However, I am far more willing to forgive a game that at least tried, like Gollum did, over a clear cash grab. While I cannot say that The Day Before release and subsequent cancellation was due to criminal intent, there is certainly something concerning there that should be watched in the modern gaming market.

I suppose I don’t know if I will ever be able to answer this question for myself, and there may even be a complaint about the state of gaming where we have to ask this kind of question. I don’t remember old games being buggy or unplayable, but then again, that is probably nostalgia. I want to base every game on its own merit, but that just isn’t possible, and there will always be other considerations.

Tell me, how much are you willing to forgive from smaller developers, or do you hold them to the same standards?

Rings and Skulls: A Critical Look at This Year’s Most Disappointing Science Fair Submissions

Whose win is most deserving of the wooden spoon?

This article does not represent GameGrin's Game of the Year awards. I would recommend reading my reviews of Skull Island: Rise of Kong and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum before any further reading.

Another year is almost over, and the Game Awards have come and gone, but there’s still a question that has been circling the drain of this year’s game releases. Out of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Skull Island: Rise of Kong, and The Walking Dead: Destines will get the title “Worst Game of 2023"? All three come from much-loved IPs, but I have only played Gollum and Kong.

I feel as though, this year, the games under the line of fire are almost as bad as each other.

The best analogy for this is to imagine a school science fair. The developers are the students, the publishers are the help they got from their parents, and the judges are the public and critics. You have students like Remedy Entertainment who have spent weeks on their project on alternate dimensions in space (mathematically speaking) and are getting the recognition well deserved for it. Then you get students like Daedalic Entertainment who use science kits bought from stores like National Geographic (or your country's equivalent) in their presentations; it’s hard to get the experiment wrong when the instructions are written down for you.

However, Daedalic Entertainment made many mistakes in developing the project, resulting in a substandard science presentation. In front of the judges are three A3 beige pages duct-taped together on the back with all the information and title, Precious Minerals, written in pencil — and a box of dirt with a few rocks in it. While the information is factual, even having the names of gems both in English and Latin, the content only explains what minerals are, is impossible to read, and is full of spelling errors. Daedalic Entertainment knew a lot about the subject to talk about but had trouble stammering and began to freeze halfway through the discussion. But, what about the box? I hear you ask me to connect the second half of this long paragraph. The box of dirt has minerals in it. Maybe not the ones expressed in the writings, but minerals nonetheless. Compared to the other projects, ‘Precious Minerals’ by Daedalic Entertainment is a science project that doesn’t demonstrate scientific methods of analysis at all, making it dull to look at.

The judges walk to the next table, thinking to themselves that the previous project was the “worst†they’ve seen that day, but there is one student in the back. Most of you know this kid. Some of you were this kid. The student didn’t start until the night before the fair to cobble together something about early humans and apes, as he didn’t have enough time to do a proper job. IguanaBee’s dad, GameMill Entertainment, and its friend, who knows a lot about Hominidae, pressured IguanaBee to do the project on the subject but didn’t contribute enough help on the presentation at all.

On the day of the fair, as the judges meet IguanaBee, they see printed-out pictures of early man, current apes, and a Tyranid from Warhammer 40,000, accompanied by multiple A4 sheets of paper with dot-point lists of information and a sign written ‘Island: Apes and Some Prehistoric Stuff’ lined the table. IguanaBee knew it would get a bad score at the fair, so it didn’t present at all; it just let the judges look over the table in confusion. When a question was asked, it answered broken, mumbled sentences about the subject but didn’t elaborate on it any further. Someone asked why a picture of a fictitious alien was among the other images. IguanaBee answered, “No, that’s Gaw, a dinosaur that eats apes.†Obviously, this isn’t the best IguanaBee can do, but it is what he made by rushing to hit the deadline.

At the end of the fair, the winner gets the prize, and everyone is packing up. People are still talking about who between Daedalic Entertainment and IguanaBee had the worst project. And there lies the issue of 2023’s worst game of the year. Between Daedalic Entertainment and IguanaBee, their “projects†and the way they were presented share similarities, with an exception. Both are conveniently bad games, are poor quality for what they’re priced for, and most of all, were riding on the backs of giants to trick people into buying them. The exception is that Daedalic Entertainment knew what they were talking about when it came to representing Gollum as a character, to a point, while Kong isn’t treated as a king in any regard, no matter if it’s meant to be a ‘coming up’ story.

But then again, Skull Island is a rushed mess that anyone who worked on it knew would get a bad reception, while Gollum spent years making it only to come out half-cooked. So, it begs the question: who deserves the wooden spoon this year? That will be decided in the GameGrin Game of the Year awards.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Review

I’d rather just read the books or live in a cave for hundreds of years.

The idea of a videogame where you get to play an addict arrested by an authority and left to rot in a prison, who suffers from a split personality that interferes with his decision-making and welfare sounds like a serious narrative-driven experience. However, in the case of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, developed and published by Daedalic Entertainment (and produced by Nacon), it’s not serious at all and the narrative stalls as soon as the action starts. To clarify, The Lord of the Rings (and other novels based in the same universe) are a collection of stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien, whose works have shaped the genre of fantasy. The books were later adapted into films by many directors, the most famous of which being Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

The game begins with Gollum — nearly a century later — locked in a room somewhere in elf territory, answering questions inquired by the old wizard, Gandalf, as Gollum explains how he found himself so far away from home. While it’s always good to see Gandalf, his character design looks a lot younger than his depictions in the books and films. The developer must have decided that the old, gray-haired look was too generic and gave him a middle-aged face and brunette hair.

Playing Gollum with keyboard controls is sticky to say the least, with my first half an hour of learning the controls to be best described as Polygon’s footage of the Cuphead tutorial. Switching to controller did help alleviate the issue and the thought that I also play like a “game journalistâ€; even so, changing over again later on drastically affected playability negatively. For some reason, trying to do basic actions on the keyboard (like a far jump) resulted in the opposite reaction I wanted. More importantly, the game’s more active parts require platforming, and getting from A to B on keyboard is a gamble whether you jump or run on all fours off the ledge.

Regarding the platforming and climbing in the game, as Gollum is agile and is known for his climbing ability, the mechanic itself — besides the voice actor for Gollum’s performance — is the only well-developed thing in the game. Unfortunately, there are times when the environment gets in the way of tricky leaps, like the climbing wall being too close to the cave ceiling that should have been found during the testing phase. Another thing that should have been found is the Orc guard’s AI. If you get caught while hanging on a ledge, they stand around your general area and do nothing about it. Orcs that would enjoy stepping on your fingers will wait for you to climb back down, climb up to get caught, or fall to your death from fatigue.

The environments in Gollum look okay, though, only when viewed far away or walking from checkpoint to checkpoint; as you come a little closer, you see the putty smeared over the cracks. The graphics and textures are disappointing for a contemporary game, especially when it’s running on high and epic quality, so (from what I saw) it seems that the developers decided to fill up maps with huge monuments.

In the prison section of the game, the majority of the maps have large structures in the centre with everything else around it. For example, a structure in development hangs on large iron chains with a large dragon’s head (even though Gollum calls it a wolf’s head; it has fire coming out of its mouth) that can be seen anywhere on the map. It looks interesting as a ‘tower’ to climb on, but I still don’t know what the structure is meant to be, and neither does the game, as no one brings it up. Additionally, these weren’t my only questions for the game.

Why is there only one Orc slave in the game when in the source material, they are more numerous and expendable than red shirts from Star Trek? How are the dark forces preparing for war but don’t seem to be making any progress between two chapters that span a few years? Why do the Orcs’ model textures look like the Uruks from the Xbox 360 port of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor? Furthermore, why does their heavy armour look like leftovers from the bad sci-fi videogame rendition of Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) by Cryo Interactive back in the late 90s?

Within Gollum, the titular character is forced to make decisions that don’t exactly affect the world in general, instead developing scenarios like a choose your own adventure. Some are for dialogue choice to say either nice or nasty responses, while others are more important, wanting you to convince the opposing alter-ego that you’re doing the right or wrong thing. While I thought it was going to be cool to debate, it was routinely easy to do; convince the narcissist (Gollum) that it will benefit him and convince the pacifist (Smeagol) that Gollum is a victim that needs to be helped.

The nail in the coffin for me, though — and the reason why the game has an abysmal review score — was being locked out of completing the game due to a recurring glitch at the end of chapter four. In the mission, a character was meant to walk from one side of the room to another but instead stayed staring at a table as well as a checkpoint that wouldn’t appear. After restarting, the same glitch occurred. Not wanting to start from scratch, I quit the game completely.

In a fantasy world, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum would have been a well-made early seventh-generation console video game or a classic sixth-generation game, possibly a sequel to The Hobbit (2003). I wouldn’t be lenient to any videogame that should be dropped in the fires of ‘Mt. Worst Game of the Year,’ even if it’s already been thrown in.

Here's Why Leaks Are Bad For The Videogame Industry

No one person should have all that power...

If you’re anything like me, and you’ve spent a lot of time on the internet following the latest gaming news on your favourite social media sites, then you’ve almost certainly heard of the infamous and much-discussed videogame leak. A leak can come from various sources, but they’re usually shared by industry insiders and popular YouTubers that often hear about a game’s delay or spicy rumour which dominates the headlines for a few days. It’s not that these things are anything terrible because, of course, we like to keep our ears peeled to the rumour mill — that’s just human nature, ya know? However, several issues arise from a leak being shared on the internet, regardless of its size or popularity.

For example, one of the best parts about the lead-up to a game’s release is all the mystery surrounding it. This, of course, depends on your tolerance towards spoilers before a title is released. Still, you can’t deny that many people prefer to go into an experience knowing as little as possible. So, by leaking an entire videogame for all to see (such as the latest The Lord of the Rings: Gollum), you’re ruining the possibility of a spoiler-free playthrough for many people and potentially ruining the developer’s life’s work. To be fair, it’s your choice whether you want to look at that stuff or not, but even if you don’t, it’s still there, and that thought will always be in your head, leading to the game being spoiled anyways. If you have all that power, why not keep it to yourself until some time has passed since the official release? I know that’s a lot to ask, and I’m aware of the human desire to be the first to do something, but at least think about the consequences for once.

Do you remember The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leak that happened a few weeks ago? A highly anticipated sequel to one of the highest-rated videogames in a long while was ruined for tons of people due to pirates who somehow managed to get access to an illegitimate copy. Fans had been waiting for it for over six years, but that lead-up was tainted because some people wanted internet clout. Even if Nintendo’s reluctance to share details beyond what it had been sharing since its announcement was partly why the leak happened in the first place, leakers and pirates who do this stuff should still face consequences that are beyond just some insignificant DMCA strikes.

There is also the issue of games potentially being delayed due to leaks, as developers may want to retool their projects after they had been shown to the world before they were ready. We have no way of knowing for sure, but if you put yourself in the shoes of a developer who has spent the last five years working on a videogame only to have the entire thing leak way before it’s ready to be shown, then wouldn’t you want to make some changes to it, too? The element of surprises is crucial to a title’s success. For example, Grand Theft Auto VI, which was shared years before its official release date, forced Rockstar Games to either change minor plot details or start from scratch, depending on how upper management felt about the security breach. Game developers are artists, too, and if art is their passion, then it must feel horrible to have their life’s passion spread around the world like that. Think about something you’ve made in your life that you feel passionate about — would you want someone you’ve never met to hate on it before you were even close to finishing it? I don’t think so.

This is a highly contested and incredibly complicated topic, so this article only scratches the surface of the issue. At the end of the day, it would be nice to go into a game’s release without any significant leaks so we can all enjoy it the same way without the fear of arguments or spoilers. Or maybe you want leaks? That’s fine. But even if you do, then you have to at least agree that fans and game developers shouldn’t have to go through the added stress of having to decide if they want to ruin their favourite pastime or stay off social media all because someone couldn’t until the official release and just had to ruin it for others. Leaks create an unnecessary dilemma, potentially affecting the videogames they’re related to and tarnishing someone’s life, work and passion. And they’re not a fun time, either…

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Out Now

Return to Middle-earth!

Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon have officially released the story-driven fantasy adventure game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an adaptation of the literary novels of J.R.R. In this title, you’ll return to Middle-earth as Gollum, embarking on a dangerous quest to retrieve his Precious.

“We‘re eagerly anticipating Middle-earth‘s fans‘ reactions to Daedalic‘s deep dive into the singularly complex Stoor Hobbit, Smeagol aka Gollum, who is driven by forces, within and outside his control, simultaneously,†said Director of Brand & Licencing at Middle-earth Enterprises, Fredrica Drotos. Playing as Gollum lets you be as skilful and sly as he is in the novels. You’re able to climb, leap, and sneak your way around dangers and it’s up to you to decide which of his two personalities prevails throughout the narrative as you face difficult moral choices. Plus, you’ll meet compelling characters, new and familiar, along the way.

Despite its big ambitions, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is currently receiving poor reception to its launch.
