Why I Love A Short Hike
Recently I played a charming little game many will recognise — A Short Hike. I'm a bit late to the party, as I've known of this game for many years, but I am so glad I got to experience it eventually.
I knew I would like it because I have a soft spot in my heart for indie games, but I couldn't have ever fathomed just how much. Whether I was running around looking for saplings to water, fish to catch, or even just gliding from one high spot to the next, I felt like a kid full of whim!
And although I was sceptical at first, the more time I spent in the game, the more things I found to love. The game has more than just cute and funny characters and pretty graphics — everything feels very alive and real. The interactions between Claire and everyone around her are very tangible, and it's quite obvious that the events you experience throughout the game (such as the volleyball-like game and the racing) had a lot of attention and love poured into them. Nothing felt half-done or superficial — quite the opposite — I got sucked into the world so much that I just continued gliding around the mountain once the game had ended. I didn't want to say goodbye to any of the lovely characters I had met. Thanks to that, I ended up achievement hunting until I completed them all!
In fact, that's one of the things that made me love it the most: I was refreshed by the peace and lightheartedness of the game. I immediately went to tweet out about it, and I usually only get that excited about Marvel!
Very few games have wiggled their way into my heart quite the same way that A Short Hike has. I highly recommend anyone who likes light-hearted games and an adventure to check it out if they haven't! The characters will have you smitten with their silly personalities in no time.
