What Are the Different Difficulties in Coromon and How To Change Them?

Pokémon’s latest PC competitor, Coromon is a pixelated creature collector in which players will work for a research team in a company named Lux Solis. You will be tasked with capturing 118 different species of Coromon throughout your journey for research; however, this isn’t your singular task as soon you’re recruited by another department to undertake another job that works as your “main” story.

Before all of this, however, you must choose your difficulty. Whether you love games with the "Extremely Insane Ultimate Super Legendary" difficulty or just want a casual stroll through the world of Velua, there is bound to be something for you. That said, let's take a look at each of the four difficulties present throughout the game:

Easy

Take that, soulslikes!

The easiest of the difficulties, Easy is meant to make Coromon more of an enjoyable ride in which players get to calm down about the battles, as they will be able to breeze through them. All of the perks the player will get throughout their journey are:

  • The Coromon's HP will be restored fully upon levelling up.
  • All items are 50% cheaper.
  • Whenever a Coromon faints, they can be revived with any cake item rather than needing a special revive item.

Easy difficulty is a great starting point for anyone that doesn't feel confident enough to start on the "Normal" difficulty or want a more peaceful experience their first time around.

Normal

For the intended experience.

Normal is the way the developers intended Coromon to be played, and as such, it is the base for all of the calculations on the other difficulties. You must use revive items to resurrect fainted Coromon, all items are full price, and Coromon only restore the amount of health earned from the level up.

Hard

You're probably going to want to avoid this one.

Hard difficulty is for players that want a tougher experience throughout their run. The two new rules added are:

  • If a Coromon faints, they'll return to the wild (Perma-death)
  • Players can't escape from any battles

The perma-death mechanic means that players will have to be extra careful for their Coromon not to faint, as running from the battle is disabled. This means that, in an unfortunate enemy crit, you can lose your starter or strongest Coromon. A very interesting twist, and one I'm excited to try out... on my second playthrough; I get too attached to my Coromon.

Insane

Harder than ELDEN RING...? Maybe.

You thought Hard was challenging? The Insane difficulty has all of the added Hard rules, along with:

  • You can't use Recall items.
  • You may only catch one Coromon in each area using the LuxLure.

For those not aware of what the LuxLure does, it attracts a Coromon that you have not caught within the area. So, you can only catch one Coromon per area per species. Meaning that, if you lose your Patterbit, you can bid farewell to using a Patterbit throughout the rest of the run.

Meanwhile, Recall items are used to return to an area without having to cross the entire habitat, meaning that if you need to return to one of the villages and are in the middle of a random forest, you'll need to walk through the entire path until you get there. At least the prices aren't adjusted, so you can stock up on cakes, and no point in buying a lot of spinners since you won't be using many of those.

Once inside a particular difficulty, you can freely change back to others via returning to the computer in Lux Solis Camp where you first selected it. There, you can change it at will.

The difficulties are a nice way to spice up your Coromon playthrough, as the Hard and Insane rules are some not seen before implemented in the genre (however, they are rather common on some Pokémon challenge runs). Thankfully, if you regret your decision on any of the difficulties, you can change this quickly by returning to the computer. We hope our article helped you! Shine bright.
