Top Indie Game Releases for September 2022
Alana/retro here once again! Summer is winding down, and it’s already back to school time. I can’t believe that summer flew by that fast! We saw lots of great titles released during the past couple of months so I can’t wait to see what autumn has in store for game releases! The bonus is, I’ve had my holiday so now I have a bit more money to spend on some great new titles to add to the game library! I’m going to share my five picks for awesome looking indie games releasing in September to help me deal with the fact that summer is basically over! These are the five games that caught my eye:
Murder on the Marine Express — 1st of September
Nintendo Switch
I have always loved murder mystery stories so when I saw this visual novel, adventure-style game I was interested to learn more. This is the story of a group of classmates from the St. Joachim Academy who have booked a trip on the Marine Express submarine train for its maiden voyage. The submarine will run along the ocean floor from California to the Japanese coast. This trip seems like the perfect way to learn about marine biology — being able to view the gorgeous underwater scenery and experience learning outside of the school environment. This perfect trip is soon ruined when one of the most popular teachers at the school is found murdered in his room. Who would have done this horrible act? Two of the students decide to investigate and figure out who on the submarine is responsible. As time passes the number of victims increases, so solving the mystery before they are targets is running out. The story sounds so interesting and I can’t wait to jump aboard and figure out who the serial killer is before meeting my untimely end!
Restless Soul — 1st of September
Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC
Restless Soul is a comedy adventure game that has you trying to help a new soul get back to the world of the living. You will solve puzzles, take on Dr Krull’s minions in bullet-hell battles, and meet a lot of eccentric characters in this crazy game with a great sense of humour.
To get to the portal and get back to the living world, the ghost has to collect eight keys before the evil Dr. Krull and his army — including the Grim Reaper — find them first. Developer Graffiti Games also created Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, so you know this is going to be a fun game that will keep you laughing!
Temtem — 6th of September
Nintendo Switch
Temtem is finally making its way onto the Nintendo Switch! This game looks like what you would get if you combined a Pokémon game with Animal Crossing. This massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure has you capturing Temtem, building and customising your house, and teaming up with a friend on their adventure. You will explore the six islands that make up the Airborne Archipelago, battling with other tamers, discovering new species of Temtem, or trading with other players.
I can’t wait to try this title out as I enjoy both Animal Crossing and Pokémon, so being able to join in with my friend’s adventure online sounds like a ton of fun! Making up my own squad of eight Temtem for battles then deciding which your rival has to discard to make a squad of five is a neat twist on the battle mechanic.
Nine Noir Lives — 7th of September
PC
In this “point-and-lick” (the developers description) adventure you play as Cuddles Nutterbutter, a feline private investigator. You live in Meow Meow Furrington, a city full of crime and the world's biggest ball of yarn. Cuddles has been asked to solve a murder by the city’s Chief of Police that involves the two biggest feline families in the city, the Montameeuws and the Catulets.
Full of comedy and cat puns, this noir-style game will have you meeting a lot of unique characters and solving puzzles to unravel the mystery of this murder. I can’t wait to get my paws on it!
Game Type DX — 8th of September
Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
In this high-score shooter you help Hoodie Girl battle the evil MediaBall and destroy the irritating advertisements to make cash of your own. First you take on menus that aren’t user friendly at all, then you take to the air to blast the ads. I can’t think of any other game where you are trying to destroy the in-game advertising!
The stage is infinitely looping, and the speed increases each time you complete a loop. With three different game modes, this seems like an interesting title that will have you continuously coming back to try to beat your high score and make more money. Sounds kind of crazy, but I think it will be a lot of fun!
Han'yo — 24th of September
PC
A 2D side-scrolling platformer where you play as Hiroko, a young female samurai whose village has been destroyed by the Oni demon. In this beautiful game, with a watercolour and ink graphical style, you will help her get revenge and avenge her people.
The game features samurai duels that will require fast reactions to ensure your victory and decide your fate. These duels are full of tension which is a nice contrast to the calm-looking backgrounds. I was convinced that I had to play this game as soon as I saw the artwork — it looks like you are playing right inside a painting. I can’t wait to check Han’yo out, it is sure to test my reflexes!
Okay, so I said I was going to list five games, but I found six that I’m really excited for so for this month you get a bonus title. Do any of these indie games seem interesting to you, or have I missed out on some titles? Let me know in the comments below! Next month will be the list for October, so I will try to keep my eye out for some creepy titles for Halloween.
