Top Indie Game Releases for August 2022

Summer is now here and overcooking everyone, so here are the games that I will be checking out when I am hiding in the shade of my house away from the brutal sunshine! There are titles here that are throw-backs to some games you may have played years ago, and a few that are totally new and unlike anything you have ever seen!

Frogun — 2nd of August

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PC

 frogun

Jump into the retro action with Renata and her frog-shaped grappling hook. This platformer is massively inspired by all the heavy hitters of the N64 and the original PlayStation era with its great low-polygon look. Renata’s explorer parents have gone to the Beelzebub ruins for their next big adventure, but they felt it was too dangerous for her, so they left her at the base camp. When they don’t return within three days, Renata knows something must have gone wrong so she grabs her trusty grappling hook — called a Frogun — and heads out to save her parents.

With a vast variety of levels to explore — lava swamps, snow caps, ancient ruins — Renata has her work cut out for her! I’m looking forward to seeing the lethal traps and cool enemies that reside in the levels and are waiting to attack. I can’t wait to try out Frogun and see how it stands up to the other classic platformers of the era!

Timothy and the Tower of Mu — 9th of August

PC

timothy

Get ready for this classic hardcore action/platformer that will have you dying a lot and learning from your past mistakes so you can get past the obstacles that await you at the Tower of Mu.

With pixel graphics and cool-looking levels and enemies to defeat, I am super excited to try out Timothy and the Tower and Mu and see how quickly I get destroyed. The enemies seem kinda cute so they can’t be that lethal right?? I can’t wait to learn more about what this tower is, why it is full of deadly enemies, and who Timothy is!

Cult of the Lamb — 11th of August

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Mac, PC

 cultofthelamb

Developed by Massive Monster, the same studio that released The Adventure Pals a few years back, I know this title is going to be awesome. In Cult of the Lamb, you play as a possessed lamb who is trying to start a cult to build a loyal following for “The One Who Waits”. You will try to recruit any of the other animals that you find while exploring to become one true cult. Once they are indoctrinated you can change their appearance to have positive and negative traits that will affect your cult.

You will need to perform sermons to maintain the cult members' faith levels, and you can even put them to work chopping wood or mining the various stones that you will use to build structures to upgrade your abilities. This game seems really different from anything I have played so I can’t wait until it releases!

Cursed to Golf — 18th of August

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

 cursedtogolf

Normally I’m not the biggest sports videogame fan, but as soon as I saw the trailer for Cursed to Golf, I was intrigued. This doesn’t look like your normal kind of golf game; instead it’s a mix of a platformer and colourful 2D pixel graphics. The game boasts tons of crazy powerups and obstacles that stand in your way to each hole. Each of the courses is run by a ghostly Legendary Caddie, who will take you under their wing and teach you the mythical ways of golf to help you on your quest for revival and redemption.

Cursed to Golf looks like a crazy fun time; I’m surprised that I want to play a golf game this bad! I can’t wait to get out of Golf Purgatory and back to the world of the living to become a Golf Legend.

Tinykin — 30th of August

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

 tinykin

I’ve had a chance to check out the demo for Tinykin and I am so excited to get to play the full game. You play as Milo, an explorer from a different planet, who lands on Earth and discovers that he is way too small for his new environment. All the residents of Earth are gone, and time hasn’t moved since 1991. To navigate this world you enlist the help of the mysterious tinykins and use their powers to create structures like bridges, ladders, and explosions to traverse this giant world.

If you have ever played Pikmin before, then you have a general idea of how the tinykin can work. You can throw them to different areas, have them carry items, break down doors, and climb higher. I especially love that you get to use a bar of soap as a mode of transportation! The demo was so much fun so I have no doubt that the full game will be a blast to explore!

These are the five titles that I am super excited to try out in August. Were you thinking of trying any of these games out, or were there others that aren’t on this list you are looking forward to? Next month it will be back to school time, and already heading towards autumn! Happy gaming until then!
