Top Five Loot Boxes in Gaming
Loot boxes in gaming have been on trial for a long time, being seen as gambling, and are starting to face greater and greater restrictions due to the perceived roots between them and gambling addictions. Many forms of gambling exist in gaming, ranging from games with loot boxes the likes of Overwatch, to sites that work as a form of online casinos such as Finnish online games.
Love them or hate them, they make up part of our industry. Here are the top five games that have best implemented it.
#1 - Rainbow 6 Siege
Rainbow 6 Siege begins this list with the loot boxes known as Alpha Packs.
Players can obtain the Alpha Packs through Renown or by a lottery spin that occurs after winning a match. What's so great about this system, is that it rewards the player for victories in online matches.
How do they work? Well, in order to obtain a pack, the spin that happens after winning a match must land on the percentage bar. If it doesn't, 2% will be added to the percentage bar. The reward is increased to 3% while playing in Ranked. If a player loses a match, the spin will not occur. However, despite that, 1.5% will be added to the percentage (2% for ranked), and if the player leaves before the match is over, they will receive no percentages.
What's great about it is that it doesn't punish the player for losing, but certainly gives them the incentive to continue playing, despite how apt they are at getting victories. And, of course, the items are purely cosmetic which is a definite plus. Getting duplicates is also a good thing since they will offer back some renown, a different amount for the rarity and type of the item.
#2 - Overwatch
Who doesn't love free loot boxes? And Overwatch is filled with them. What's great about Overwatch's loot boxes is that you get them every time you level up.
Each loot box will contain an assortment of four random items, with at least one of them being rare or better. If the player receives a duplicate, they will receive credits as compensation. The amount of credits received will vary according to the rarity, regardless of what kind of item it was.
#3 - League of Legends
League of Legends handles its loot boxes differently than the others. You are awarded a loot box as a reward for performing well.
The Champion Mastery System rates the player at the end of each round with a rank ranging from D- to S+. Players that get an S- or higher will receive a free loot box (or if you're in a party, everyone benefits from one person getting the box), limited to once weekly. This can stack up to four times, for a total of four boxes ready to be acquired.
Whether you play on the Summoner's Rift, or in ARAM, if you get an S- or higher you will get a box that can contain anything ranging from limited skins that are no longer available, ward skins, icons, and more!
#4 - Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact has a loot box system, sort of. Instead of offering cosmetics, the game offers characters and weapons that are five stars, allowing you to unlock new characters with unique skills that can (and oftentimes are) very powerful.
What allows Genshin Impact to make it to the list despite the P2W mechanic is that the game isn't really multiplayer. You can also acquire a box (or Wishes in the game) that will offer you the highest rank (five-star) guaranteed every 90. After all, Genshin Impact is a gacha game first and foremost.
All of the currency for the boxes can be bought through a monthly purchase that offers an amount daily, or with the daily quests that you can do daily. Additionally, every event offers a ton of currency to work towards the pity (the name of the guarantee system) in the banners.
#5 - Heroes of the Storm
It is evident that if Blizzard does one thing well, it's loot box systems. With two of their games making it to the list!
Heroes of the Storm has a generous system that offers a box in several different ways. The first, similarly to Overwatch, is player levels. Every time the player levels up, they have a chance to receive any kind of loot box: Common, Rare and Epic. Every five times the player receives a common in a row, they receive one rare. Additionally, every 25 levels the player receives an Epic loot box.
Aside from that, every time a Hero reaches a multiple of 10 in their levels they receive a hero-specific loot box, containing something for the Hero that unlocked it.
