Top 5 Easiest Boss Fights in Videogames

Top 5 Easiest Boss Fights in Videogames

Boss fights in videogames are intended to be a challenge for the player as they test their skills against an enemy of unique standing and power. Essentially, they should be some of the most memorable and difficult sections of a game. Some bosses only achieve half of that description.

These five boss fights have built a lasting reputation for the ease at which they can be conquered. Whether they are an extremely easy pushover early in a game, a gag fight whose whole purpose is to be a comically simple opponent, or are just poorly designed in a way that fails to account for any player effort, the bosses on this list are some of the least stress-inducing battles in gaming history.

5. Bubble Man – Mega Man 2

It’s not like there aren’t plenty of difficult Robot Masters in Mega Man games, but the Metal Blade in the series’ second entry makes super quick work of nearly half of Dr. Wily’s creations. Flash Man and (bizarrely) Metal Man are no match to this overpowered weapon, yet Bubble Man makes it onto this list for offering the weakest resistance to his inevitable four-hit death. Not only is his main projectile based on fragile pockets of air that children love to play with, but Bubble Man’s jumping arc and the arena’s spiked-ceiling are rendered useless by the Metal Blade’s eight-directional shooting. Bubble Man is as threatening as his name suggests, and he sinks to fifth place on this countdown.

4. Angler Fish – The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Most sushi rolls take longer to eat than the time required to dispatch this underwater underachiever. All it takes is a handful of sword flurries to the Angler Fish’s massive, easily accessible lightbulb to send it to a watery grave. Even if the fight goes beyond the 10 second mark, the Angler Fish attacks Link with no sense of purpose or heart. Its charges can be simply avoided given the freedom of movement granted when swimming and the falling bricks and Angler Fries offer as much challenge as a sickly goldfish. And who said that all Zelda water sections were migraine-levels of frustrating?

3. Big Bob-omb - Super Mario 64

Just a quick note, Big Bob-omb: taunting the player by saying, “Can you pick me up from behind and hurl me to the royal turf? I think that you cannot!” is probably not a good idea if the method for defeating you is picking you up from behind and hurling you to the royal turf. It becomes even more disastrous if the act of picking you up from behind and hurling you to the royal turf is as simple as shelling peas. You may be the first boss in Super Mario 64, but that doesn’t give you the right to be this laughably elementary. Bob-omb even kind of sounds like the “Fail” sound effect that goes off in game shows when a contestant picks the wrong answer. Bob-omb!

2. Golem Overlord – Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger Golem Boss

The bosses discussed so far have been easy due to a combination of item exploitation, absence of aggression, or overbearing telegraphing. Golem Overlord from Chrono Trigger find his way into the runner-up position thanks to his crippling lack of confidence. Usually an enemy counting down in an RPG brings about waves of anxiety in the player as they anticipate a super deadly attack that could potentially obliterate their party. However, after Golem Overlord stumbles his way from five to one, he discovers he can’t even remember the move and sheepishly begins again at five. It that wasn’t enough, after a while he flees from the battle citing a fear of heights. We all have days when we choke. Golem Overlord’s just happened to be against the greatest warriors throughout time.

1. Whispy Woods – Kirby Series

At this point, beating up Whispy Woods early on in a Kirby game is just routine. It’s a habitual process that requires almost no thought or effort from the player as they lazily dodge apples and clouds while pummelling the poor tree with whatever copy ability they possess. And despite being made to suffer in over a dozen Kirby games, Whispy Woods just keeps on coming back for more with little evolution in its attack patterns or strength. Call it a death wish or blind optimism or plain insanity, but surely Whispy Woods has got to be getting sick of all the one-sided defeats at this point?

While Kirby and his friends adventure around Dream Land, Whispy Woods must be living a waking nightmare as the most laughably easy boss in videogames.
