The Story of Faker - The Greatest League of Legends Player and His Effect on Esports

On the 7th of May 1996, in Seoul, South Korea, a legend was born. The greatest LoL player of all time. Lee Sang-hyeok was raised by a single parent - his father who believed that Faker was born to perform in the esports industry. It all began with the MOBA game CHAOS but he moved on to League of Legends in December 2011. He found the game while browsing the web. In an esports online competitive platform, players around the world play different games and compete with each other to determine who is the best. Shortly after that, he became sought after by several Korean teams. The decision to turn ‘Pro’ was a tough one for Faker since he just entered high-school. However, he decided to drop out and join SKT T1’s secondary squad. They quickly became very well-known, acquiring the top position at the Olympus Champions Spring 2013. Faker gained people’s attention when he dominated ‘Ambition’ on the mid lane. At the 2013 summer finals, Faker shocked the world with his insane outplay with Zed vs ‘Ryu’. That game win earned SKT a spot in the 2013 World Championship which gave Faker a chance to prove his ‘medal’ internationally. SKT won against Royal Club with 3-0 at the grand finals and that was their first Worlds title.

The esports fanbase called Faker “The best in the world”. Now, betting on an esports player like Faker has very high odds (he is the best, right?). esports betting is a relatively new concept these days with many online bookmakers now happy to take a bet on esports matches around the world. Due to the COVID-19 situation right now, the esports competitive platforms are gaining popularity as online gaming is still running and you can bet for your favorite teams. Players are playing the games remotely from their homes and gaming tournaments are still going ahead completely online with players able to log into tournaments remotely and taking care of social distancing measures. Esports betting works exactly the same way as RL sports betting websites. You can bet for many games such as League of Legends (LoL), Counter-Strike (CS:GO), Dota 2, FIFA, F1 and much more.

For online bettors looking to bet online, Faker is the guy to bet upon. You have to be a very unlucky guy to bet on Faker and lose your money. In fact, following some of the teams that play in esports tournaments help you a lot with better and safer betting… I mean, every single person does it for some extra cash right? Have knowledge of what you’re betting for! It’s not that hard.

Faker and SKT were dominating on the esports stage and got better game-by-game. However, their bad days came too in the Spring and Summer season of 2014. They had one last shot at worlds through the regional qualifiers but they lost vs ‘NaJin W Shield’ 3-1. It was time for a change. ‘Impact’ and ‘Piglet’ left the team. SKT’s two squads were merged into one. For the first time, Faker had a competition for his starting role. He and ‘Easyhoon’ would split the duties throughout the season. Faker was used to the turns for playing mid, but when he didn’t play, seeing his team winning and celebrating without him, made him sad. However, SKT got to the MSI 2015.

They got out of the group stages. At the finals against ‘Edward Gaming’, SKT decided to put Faker on the bench and let Easyhoon play on the mid lane against ‘Pawn’, a player who was a big problem for Faker. However, SKT were losing 1-2. Faker came back for the 4th game taking the victory and forcing a final deciding 5th game. ‘EDG’ didn’t ban ‘Leblanc’ which was Faker's secret weapon since he had never lost a competitive match with it. However, this was a ‘bait’ since EDG’s mid lane happened to be ‘Morgana’ which is a counter pick for ‘Leblanc’. Faker tried his best, playing well despite the counter pick, but EDG managed to win the game, therefore the MSI title, writing in the history book the first loss of Faker as ‘Leblanc’.

After their loss at MSI 2015, SKT bounced back, Faker was returning to his dominant form and that gave him the opportunity to win his second world championship. He said that it takes a lot of effort to stay at the top but after winning his second world championship, he wanted so badly to win the only international event left - the MSI. After the disappointment at MSI 2015, this was Faker’s chance to come back at the top.

At the 2016 World Championship Finals, SKT had a very challenging win vs SSG (3-2). Before the finals, SKT was pegged at -450 as favourite to win while SSG was at +300 by Bovada. Such odds can be found on many betting websites that you can try your luck and match your esports knowledge. You can try esports betting at freebets.co.uk where you can find bets for different esport games with the latest competitive matches. The event cast commented that Faker was the MVP, allowing his team to win their 3rd championship. These days due to COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lack of real-life sports at the moment. Many people that used to bet on football, basketball, tennis, etc. are now heading to the esports betting websites and bet there. Many people that didn’t even know that esports betting existed, found it very entertaining and interesting to bet for online games. One more good thing is that you can bet 24/7 due to the consistent activity of the esports platform. There are always esport matches that you can bet on. That is because there are different teams from all around the world and they play in different time zones.

If Faker, the greatest League of Legends player, seems like a guy who can make you some money, you can check his match performance and his team performance (SKTs’ name is now T1). It’s a good thing to mark one, two or three teams and follow them often. That can help you with understanding how the game works and how those teams are performing vs each other and vs other teams. That is one of the pieces of advice that you need for proper betting. I mean it’s always good that you know who you are betting for, right? That can prevent you from unnecessarily losing big amounts of money.

However, remember that betting is for fun! Don’t try to substitute your job with it! Know your limits, if you don’t know them - set them. It’s always good to know how much money you can spend monthly on betting. And I’m saying this to prevent you from addiction to betting since it’s not 100% sure that you will win. So I’m gonna say it again - play for fun, bet for fun.

There are a lot of betting websites that offer deposit bonuses which allow you to make some bets with their money. Before that, you must read the requirements for using their bonuses. The odds are higher if you bet for a team with a bigger chance to win but who knows… sometimes miracles happen and if you bet for a team that has a big coefficient for winning (and it wins) you’re gonna be so happy about it. In fact, be careful and play safe!
