The Games We Played: 90s PC Poker Games That Will Make You Nostalgic
The games we play, while we are young, can sometimes be the most memorable. Poker is a game that has been around for centuries, but it was in the late '90s and early 2000s when poker became one of the most popular card games for people to play on their home computers.
Poker was a very popular game back then - and it still is now, especially in its online variations, but is online poker legal? You may wonder. In many US states and around the world, poker is indeed legal and remains a favourite pastime with many variations available online and offline (land based that is…).
Whether you were on a Windows 98 PC or an Apple IIe, these are some of the best and most popular computer games from that era.
Poker Solitaire
The first game I remember playing is called Poker Solitaire. In this game, you are dealt a hand of cards and the goal is to make poker hands like a full house or four of a kind in order to win. I remember playing this game in the mid-90s and still often play it now.
Pacific Poker
One of the most popular poker variations that have been around for 20 years is Pacific Poker, which since changed its name. In this game, you play against other people who are seated at a table and try to win by having better cards than your opponents. This is one of my favourite games because it combines strategy with luck to make you feel like you are really playing poker.
Poker Academy: Texas Hold'em
This was one of my favourite games to play when I was younger. You were dealt two cards face down, three cards face down, four cards that are shown one at a time with betting rounds between them until there are five rounds of betting. The object is to make the best poker hand possible by using either the cards in your hand or those on the table.
Pyramid Poker
There's also Pyramid Poker where you have to make poker hands by matching suit combinations on your cards with those on the board.
Tens or Better
Then there's Tens or Better, which requires that at least one card must be 10 or higher for it to count as winning. The object of the game is to make a poker hand with five cards. But unlike traditional games, in this one there are also rounds where you get more hands as well - and not just for yourself but other players too!
Blackjack
Lastly, there's "Blackjack." This game has some similarities with other games but instead of making poker hands, you are trying to get as close to 21 without going over.
Final Thoughts
We hope you enjoyed our little trip down memory lane with these classic poker games. It was fun playing these games when my dad would teach me how they work and now I'm teaching my kids!
