The holidays are a stressful time, though some seem to skate by them without a care in the world — it's witchcraft, I tell you! To me, the time after Christmas may even be more so, as the new year creeps up on us, filled with both promise and responsibility. In these times, I usually hunt down some kind of hectic movement shooter to keep my brain occupied and help me blow off some steam. Last year (gotta start these jokes early), however, I found one that both provided this and seemingly fit the theme of the begun year: Immortals of Aveum.
In this title, you fill the shoes of Jak, a young lad inducted into the order of the Magni, elite warriors with magical powers. Using his new-found skills, Jak must fight to liberate his hometown, all while finding out the secrets of Aveum’s past. While this may sound pretty basic as far as plots go, the gameplay and plot of the game were what pulled me in. Jak, and the people he interacts with, have personality and draw you in, while the magical combat keeps you entertained. Imagine an FPS, but substitute the guns for spells and give the main character some fun movement options and a magic shield, and bam! Immortals of Aveum.
