RANKING EXPLAIN v1.4

Judith Ranster - The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki

30th of September on PlayStation 4

T POSE 2109 Judithb

Is she fashionable or does she just have orange-ish hair? Here’s a hint: it’s both!

Introduced in The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki, the 11th game in the Trails series, Judith Ranster is an actress with a strong will and an even stronger sense of fashion. Now let’s talk about that ‘fit!

Let’s start at the top with that one earring. I love when someone wears one earring. There’s just something so edgy about it. Like, “don’t mess with me. I have one earring. I’m wild.” If you can’t tell, I don’t have my ears pierced.

Now the actual (crop) top. A cropped turtleneck tank top is a bit of a mouthful, but it’s definitely not an eyeful. Toeing the fine line between high fashion and inappropriate for the workplace, Judith wears what I affectionately call a “slut shirt.” This piece has everything hot in a shirt. It’s tight, it’s black, it’s a crop, it doesn’t have sleeves, it’s a turtleneck, and it features a cleavage window with a nice mesh cover. A very tasteful way for this actress to show off her chest piece without exposing too much. My only qualm is THAT HER SUNGLASSES ARE INSIDE HER SHIRT HOW??? I DON’T GET IT. High fashion nonetheless.

Below the belt (the literal belt, which we’ll get to) are a pair of mid-rise shorty shorts that perfectly match Judith’s hair. Now that is videogame magic. I personally love short shorts, so I’m biased about these. They’re all I wear, no joke - though mine are all high-waisted. Judith gets away with the mid-waist cut well however, with the use of both a real belt and the belt of her coat.

But wait! Two belts? (Actually, there’s three if you count that gold cord.) Is that practical?

No. But this is a videogame and those belts look cute. And more importantly, they’re excellent accessories, matching the colour of Judith’s shoes, bracelet, and eyes. Shorts that match your hair and belts that complement your eyes, isn’t that the dream?

With that said, I’m not a big fan of the shoes. I didn’t care too much for the shape or the clear parts of the shoe; I do appreciate the colour though. Going back up from the shoe are a pair of pantyhose straight from an 80s sci-fi movie, and that’s a compliment.

Now the big draw: that coat! The cut-out shoulders, the length, the stripes, that collar! I would buy that coat, I absolutely love it. It’s the piece that ties this hot mess of an outfit together and truly makes the look worth looking at.

Overall, Judith is an actress and she definitely knows how to dress like one. - Charr

Mona - WarioWare: Get It Together

10th of September on Nintendo Switch

T POSE 2109 Mona

Like many a creative, Mona dons many hats to fund her videogame-developing endeavours. She’s been a news reporter, a pizza delivery driver, a cheerleader, an explorer, a detective, a singer, and a restaurant server at several establishments to name but a few!

With all the various costumes and workplace attire she’s accumulated over the years, it’s no wonder that her casual look resembles a uniform at all! First thing we noticed is how extremely minimal the look is: from the block colour per item of clothing, to how many pieces go into this outfit - but each garment serves a purpose in decoding how Mona is as a person.

For starters, her white hooded duster jacket is very much reminiscent of scientist’s lab coat - someone who studies, experiments, and potentially invents. Then we have the overall “Mod-chic”; a subculture born from the youth of London in the 1950s & 60s, typically associated with moped scooters (of which Mona drives). Here she sports a crimson minidress with matching knee-high go-go boots - a staple of fashionistas from the Mod scene, and paired nicely with a complimentary retro helmet and ski goggles.

Though the outfit screams 60s, there was a heavy revival of both the Mod look and the minimalist movement in the 1990s; and suffice it to say, that the 60s and 90s aesthetics has returned thirty years later, with Mona and her moped. - Danielle

Saber - Melty Blood: Type Lumina

30th of September on Windows, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One

T POSE 2109 Saber

In a sea of mostly plain and casual wear or maid and nun uniforms, Saber stands out in Type Lumina. And that’s not only by literally being King Arthur, nor being a guest character from the Fate series, a franchise set in roughly the same universe as Melty Blood. As can be plainly seen, the Once and Future King of England also actually makes the sensible decision to bring a set of armour to her fights.

Saber’s choice of wear is primarily functional, offering a clean balance of defence, comfort, and flexibility in the arms to allow her to properly wield Excalibur. Most of the outfit is made up of her classically regal blue dress with golden trim, matching the tightly-tied blue ribbon in her hair. This royal blue contrasts elegantly against that trim as well as Saber’s golden blade and golden locks.

It is over this dress that most of the armour is set, with a breastplate, two heavy gauntlets to show off her immense strength, two thigh guards, and a pair of boots. All of this is made from a shimmering silver which, alongside the white under section of Saber’s dress, provides a further compliment to the dominant central blue colour and adds to her theme as a shining leader made up of silver and gold. Additionally, all armour pieces feature layers of plating that gives the dress a tiered sense. And that’s not even mentioning the etched design on the breastplate, which seems to evoke an idea of leaves or wings, presenting Saber as a leader with the power to create meaningful, uplifting change.

Saber may have been sporting the same outfit for 17 years, but can you blame her? If such a classic look is as good as this, there’s really no need to change it. - Erin
