Street Fighter x Tekken 10th Anniversary
It’s hard to believe that Street Fighter X Tekken is 10 years old! I still remember seeing this at gamescom, many moons ago, with producer Yoshinori Ono showing off a tag-team fighter featuring a mixed cast of Street Fighter and Tekken legends. Starting as a bet between the producers of Street Fighter and Tekken, Ono-san managed to get his vision of this crossover out first. Rolling on from the hype of Street Fighter IV, SFxT continued with the fantastic art style of its cousin; however, several decisions tainted what could have been another stellar fighting game from Capcom.
While our review still held the game in a favourable light, there’s no denying that having playable characters on the physical media locked behind a paywall was a shady strategy. Additionally, online tag-team matches weren’t available for the Xbox 360 version of the game. There were also some strange mechanics within the title too as it introduced battle gems that could be equipped to boost stats for your character, which felt out of place for this kind of fighting game.
Despite the controversy and oddities, Street Fighter x Tekken still went on to be a reasonably popular entry in the fighting game scene, with some people still dipping in for a blast ten years on. However, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the other side of this bet, so I don’t hold any hope in experiencing what a Tekken x Street Fighter title could be like (and no, I’m not counting the introduction of Akuma into Tekken 7).
So, happy 10th birthday Street Fighter x Tekken, you quirky little devil!
