So I Tried…Fallout 3

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PC version of Fallout 3

What I thought it was

An FPS based on the Fallout universe. I’m a bit of an RPG nerd so I pretty much disregarded Fallout 3 at the time of release as it didn’t seem anything like the original games. That’s not necessarily that bad a thing, but I had it down as just another shooter so it was on my “to play” list, just not high on it. With the recent release of number four, now seems like a good time to promote it up to the top.

What it actually is

It’s a pretty cool little mash up of the RPG and FPS genre. It’s closer to a shooter than anything else, but you can see even in the first half hour that this is going to get as complex as I want it to in the long run and I’m going to be able to customise my game in the way that I loved with Fallout 1 and 2. I met the Tunnel Snakes, who seemed far cooler in the WTFBBQ they starred in a few weeks ago. I really want to slap Butch already. I find out about my father leaving the vault and begin my first proper shootout of the game, then the timer goes off and my half hour is up.

You don't rule at all, you're really mean!

Will I keep playing?

Yes. I didn’t really want to stop playing to write this article if I’m honest! At the very least, I need to play long enough to give that aforementioned slap to Butch. There’s something about him I really didn’t like.

I really felt Bethesda did a great job of drawing you in and making you feel the character was uniquely you in the rather prolonged introductory sequence so even though I didn’t play much of the game, I already have a bit of an attachment to the character. I’m going to resume playing right now and I feel that this is going to end up being something of a time sink for me.

The best thing about waiting this long to play - all of the bugs have been modded out, and if you need help with literally anything, there are twenty guides easily available, and a handful of people you can ask!

Yes. It also means that I already know it's worth playing as other people have done the whole checking it out thing for me. Sometimes, there's a lot of benefit in being too lazy to play a game.
