So I Tried... SkyDrift

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PC version of SkyDrift.

What I thought it was

From the video, a plane-based Mario Kart with fewer colourful characters. In fact, no characters at all… But the weapons seem to be there, at least. Racing games aren’t my forté, but this is aircraft-based, so I’m less likely to lose my temper at lamp posts and such for getting in my way.

What it actually is

It’s crazier than Mario Kart, is what it is! At least in Mario Kart everyone isn’t trying to murder everyone else every five seconds… But that made it all the more fun for me, rather than getting annoyed that people were passing me because I didn’t slow down at a corner, I could get mad at the pilots who took me down. With near-instant respawns it doesn’t take much to catch up again, which lends to its arcade-style feel.

Will I keep playing

Probably not, honestly. As I mentioned, racing games aren’t my thing. And although it was fun, it’s not engaging enough for me. At least in Need for Speed Most Wanted, there’s a storyline that you can resolve. SkyDrift seems to be nothing more than two racing types and a multiplayer mode, and ‘weapons or no weapons’ isn’t enough for a campaign mode for me. The game itself is really good, especially playing with a controller. It looks great, handles well and I would recommend it to people who like racing games. If you don’t, however, it’s a little shallow.
