So I Tried... Farming Simulator 14
Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a new type of game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me.
What I thought it was
Well, farming it seems. Drive a tractor, run over some crops in a combine harvester, murder thousands of field mice and insects… General farming, right? Maybe milk a cow, rebuild a fence or chase kids away from my fields with a shotgun. Perhaps host a fox hunting party!
What it actually is
Farming. I figured it would be easy - they do it in Emmerdale all the time! At least they did the last time I watched it... If actors can do it, so can I! Well, I can't... It starts you off with a combine harvester, a tractor and a trailer. You harvest the one full field, then about halfway through your combine is full, so you use your tractor to find the trailer and collect the grain/wheat/chaff/whatever it harvests. Yes there was a guide, but I figured it couldn't be that hard, so skipped it. You take the trailer to sell the grain, or empty it into your silos, then return and carry on. But I hadn't sown anything in the second free field, so when I had two empty fields - I had to wait for them both to grow whatever I had sown on them. Which takes a long time: especially for a videogame. I barely had some green before the thirty minutes was up and I cheered in joy. The combine moves at a maximum of 15 mph, the tractor at 35: these are not Mario Karts by any means. There is a multiplayer option, but after the time I spent in single-player I don't think I want to meet anyone who actually enjoys this...
Will I keep playing
No. You couldn't pay me to play this for more than half an hour. I only made it that far because this is the first article, and there is an autopilot. However once I realised it costs my farm $1 every second, I had to stop that or go bankrupt. Which may have been fun. I tried milking cows, but it wouldn't give me the option to get off of the tractor and do it. I was given a mission to chase a goat which had stolen water, but it turned out it was less Goat Simulator and more "Water's over there, drive over it.". If the missions were more frequent it may have ignited my interest more, but I'm sorry Farming Simulator 14 (God I hope that's the year not edition), but you're getting deleted.
