So I Tried...I Am Setsuna

In each edition of So I Tried… a member of GameGrin will play a game they have never tried before. The only rule? Play half an hour, no more, no less. Will it turn out to be a great title that will absolutely blow my mind? Or will it be another title for the "Hide from my Steam Library" pile? Let's find out together. This time I played I Am Setsuna.

What I Thought It Was

Having followed the development of this title since it was first announced, I was pretty sure it was a turn-based JRPG. Citing Chrono Trigger as a direct inspiration, I immediately had very high expectations. Chrono Trigger is considered by most fans of the RPG genre to be one of the finest RPGs ever crafted, and I was very curious to see how I Am Setsuna compares.

What It Actually Is

I was correct in assuming it's a turn-based JRPG, and the Chrono Trigger inspiration is extremely plain to see. The art, the music, the sound effects, even the character designs and development are very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. The battle system is nearly an exact replica, with a few added differences. It has great art direction, music, and overall feel. It feels like an epic quest is just beginning, and 30 minutes was enough time to get me wanting more.

Will I Keep Playing

You bet! It's been great so far, once passed the 5-10 minute story-driven tutorial, it really opens up and draws you in with the continuing story and new characters. I can't wait to play more and see how things develop! This is one I will definitely be finishing in the near future. Things look great for Tokyo RPG Factory so far, and I hope they continue to make games at this level of quality.
