So I Tried… I Am Bread

So I Tried… I Am Bread

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PS4 version of I Am Bread.

What I thought it was

A game where you create the perfect slice of toast. Controlling the bread by its corners, you must navigate the dangers of a house until you can serve yourself up on a plate.

What it actually is

Not too different from what I thought/remembered from our review coverage. You have the very difficult job of getting a very tough bit of fresh bread to a heat source and get it toasted. You can pick up butter, jam, ants, dirt, fluff… Anything you’d usually find in a normal kitchen. Depending on the level, the heat source can be anything from an oven to a broken TV.

Will I keep playing

I’m surprised to find myself saying yes. It’s infuriating, but at the same time intriguing, which is something I never thought I’d say when I first started playing. But, it has a story, however basic, and that’s good enough to keep me interested. I’ve seen a trailer and know that you wind up on the outside of a car, plus there are a load of other modes and levels. It may be a bit of the old ‘car wreck’ syndrome, where I just can’t look away, but flying a bit of bread with fitted rocket boosters? What could go wrong?
