So I Tried… Game of Thrones Episode One
Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the Android version of Game of Thrones Episode One.
What I thought it was
An adventure game by Telltale, which is most likely similar to The Wolf Among Us or The Walking Dead. I’ve played neither of those, but I have played Tales of Monkey Island and Missing Profile! I've read our review but as I haven't actually watched anything after the first episode of Game of Thrones, I have no idea who anyone is. But I believe that winter is coming and thrones made out of swords look pretty badass.
What it actually is
An adventure game by Telltale, very different from Tales of Monkey Island with many quick-time events. Even with my limited knowledge of the show, I figured out that this game takes place a few seasons in, after the good guys are kicked out of power. The good guys being the ones named after Iron Man: Tony Stark. And the good guys in this are House Forrester who are lumberjacks for Ironwood - I think this George R.R. Martin guy is a Marvel Comics fan!
The game, even on mobile, had me hooked as I went through the opening sequence. As I've been playing Life Is Strange, having another game with choices-mean-consequences was pretty cool. Each time you do something of note, you get told that the person will remember it, or you gave your word about something: until it goes wrong. Lots of fire, death and swordplay with more QTEs and I was actually quite excited by the whole thing. That's the way to get someone to continue playing.
Will I keep playing
Yes, much to my own surprise. I want to know what happens with House Forrester next, after Garrett tells his uncle his lord's message. I don't like being so vague, but I'm trying to avoid most spoilers, and I'm also terrible with names at the best of times... It is quite an exciting game, with a lot less wandering around than I'm used to with my adventure games. And less comedy - but then, it's not Monkey Island... If the rest of the season is like this I may have to start bingeing on the TV show before playing the next four episodes...
