So I Tried... Froggy's Battle

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never played before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I wanted to try out Froggy’s Battle. This game stars an adorable frog on a skateboard. What more do you need?

What I thought it was

Based on the look of Froggy’s Battle, I figured this would be a simplistic title that had the frog hero jumping on the enemies it encountered with its skateboard. Since the play area is a circle, it looks like it may be difficult to control, especially when your frog is upside down.

What it actually is

Froggy’s Battle is an adorable and incredibly addictive roguelike game. The stage you are playing on is a circle (a stage loop) and you will skate around it defending it from enemy frogs that are trying to take your favourite skating spot. In the beginning, you fight tiny tadpoles by jumping on them with your board but as you progress they will become stronger. When all the enemies in the wave are defeated, you will get the choice of a card from three. These cards can be stat upgrades to improve your luck so that you get more rare cards pop up to collect, improve your strength (appropriately called Strong Boi) which also makes your attacks inflict more Physical and Skate Damage, or you can even get weapons like Fire Wand that throws flames at enemies in front of you. As you progress you can even get adorable headwear like a wizard hat that gives you the ability to shoot fireballs above you, an archer hat and you shoot arrows in front of you, or the jester hat where your frog juggles balls to hit the frogs surrounding you.

When your run ends, the Game Over stats screen shows your Battle Time, Enemies Beaten, Hits Taken, Best DPS, and Max Damage dealt, along with any achievements you may have earned during that run. Along with that, we see the Stats for “Froggy the Hero” and a picture of what they looked like at the end of the run, mine was wearing a wizard hat and was armed with a staff (while standing on the skateboard). In the top right of the screen, you learn facts about Froggy, like they support trans rights and hate capitalism, important morals for a hero.

Will I keep playing

I will definitely continue playing Froggy’s Battle! It’s so wholesome, cute, and challenging, especially when you unlock the hard difficulty! I have been loving this game so much that I have gifted it to friends as it only costs £1.69 or $1.99 US. It’s an amazing deal that you shouldn’t miss; it is the perfect game for short spurts when you just want something quick to play or if you have a Steam Deck.
