So I Tried... Dying Light: The Following
With all the fuss surrounding the DLC of Dying Light, I was one of those caught up in the hype of The Following. For me, the original game was a joy to play, especially with friends, but it did have its limitations. I was left wanting more in the slums and the city, and I was sometimes running out of things to do in both locations, as I found myself running out of tasks to complete. However, taking a look at the DLC gave me the opportunity to reignite my affinity with this game once again.
What I thought it was
Originally, I thought the DLC was going to be a standard map expansion on top of the slums and city. I didn’t believe there was going to be that much detail included in the DLC, and I had hoped there will be a full campaign, with plenty of side missions and an enhanced multiplayer to go with it.
What it actually was
The Following adds a fantastic new story to what was an already compelling one, and all the details appear to have been carefully thought out and put together. That wasn’t the only plus side for me, because the size of the map was a welcomed surprise. The map is set within an expansive farmland with the safe zones, picturesque scenery, safe zones – and of course, zombies. During my time with The Following, I managed to complete a quest and find a vehicle (upon doing so, I found out that you can actually customise vehicles and gain legend points). Also, call it bravery or stupidity, but I just had to wait until night fell, to really immerse myself in the full experience of the game. Even more so than in the slum and the city, running away from The Volatile at night, with limited places to hide, was a rather frightening experience.
Will I keep playing
Yes, I loved it and I will be playing on. It is a sign of a great videogame when it combines a free, open world with a compelling storyline, with many side quests to keep you occupied on top of that. Dying Light already had this, but with the DLC they have managed to create a game within a game, and one that appears to be jam-packed with detail, while also allowing gamers the freedom to roam around the map. I cannot speak highly enough of The Following, it is truly masterful.
