Remembering Some of the Very Best Dragons in Videogames

Throughout the history of gaming, so many characters have helped shape the success of games. On a range of leading platforms, there have been an array of unforgettable characters over the years, with the likes of Lara Croft, Mario, Gordon Freeman, Jill Valentine, Princess Zelda, Agent 47, and Kratos immediately springing to mind. We’ve also been exposed to some almighty dragons. In fact, dragons have been heavily featured in plenty of top games.

After all, we tend to have a fascination with dragons. As such, they’ve always been go-to characters for game-makers to add to specific titles. From cute and friendly dragons to mightily powerful, fire-breathing beasts, dragons have more than played their part in so many video games. These fictional creatures have always had unique designs and tend to be formidable propositions in games, resulting in them standing out on numerous occasions.

Even in 2024, there are plenty of dragon-filled titles to get through. For example, Black Desert Online features pets like the Young Crimson Dragon, while a title like Dragons Gold 100 game contains an abundance of dragons as gamers embark on a mythical adventure. The options don’t end there, though. Let’s take a look at some other memorable dragons below.

Black Dragon Kalameet (Dark Souls)

When it comes to combat-focused gameplay, Dark Souls is hard to beat. The dark fantasy action role-playing game series contains some terrifying dragon characters, although none of them come close to Kalameet. Hard to defeat and extremely scary in appearance, Dark Souls probably wouldn’t be the series it is today without Black Dragon Kalameet’s input.

Shenron (Dragon Ball FighterZ)

A dragon who is capable of granting wishes to a variety of other characters in Dragon Ball, Shenron’s influence cannot be disputed. A recognizable dragon, Shenron has the ability to fulfill any wish and is featured throughout Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Spyro (Spyro the Dragon Series)

One of the cutest dragons the world has ever seen, Spyro is the protagonist in the Spyro the Dragon series of games. A much-loved character among the gaming community, his loveable personality is a particular highlight. Spyro is also a fun character to play along as, be it while exploring a vibrant world or taking on a tough challenge.

Ender Dragon (Minecraft)

Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games of all time, thanks to an array of impressive features that have enabled it to remain relevant. In the game, Ender Dragon arguably steals the show, with the last and the first boss representing a stern test for Minecraft gamers to overcome. Spawned through mods, Ender Dragon is seen in all difficulty modes and is a character the Minecraft community knows and loves.

Deathwing (World of Warcraft)

If you’ve played World of Warcraft before, then you’ll definitely remember Deathwing. Also known as Neltharion the Earth-Warder, he is a deadly presence who takes part in so many horrifying scenes, although his battle is easily his biggest highlight in the entire game. Without Deathwing, World of Warcraft just wouldn’t be the same.

Dragonite (Pokémon Series)

A Pokémon that trainers can rely on, Dragonite’s abilities are clear. Not only is it huge in appearance, but the big orange beast has an array of devastatingly powerful attacks. One of the most popular types of Pokémon from the franchise, while it does possess a friendlier appearance compared to many other dragons on the list, Dragonite is a Pokémon every trainer wants to have at their disposal, given its death-dealing abilities in battle.

Special mention must also go to Saskia (The Witcher 2), Ridley (Metroid), Hraezlyr (God Of War), Bahamut (Final Fantasy), and High Dragons (Dragon Age: Inquisition).
