Our Time At EGX 2014
This weekend past, GameGrin attended EGX, the gaming convention in Earl’s Court, London. This is an event that gives gamers the chance to get a hands-on experience with some of the biggest and hottest upcoming releases, as well as some smaller titles that they may not have heard of.
This was our second time attending the event and we have to say, it was one of our preferred public conventions in terms of organisation. It was very easy to find everything and at no point did we feel that there were too many people within the venue over-crowding it.
We didn’t get much time with many of the games as we did most of the coverage for them at Gamescom and E3, but some of the titles present were Evolve, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Dead Island 2, Alien: Isolation and Borderlands: The Pre-sequel. On the indie side of things, there were titles such as Big Pharma, Gang Beasts, Flockers, Prison Architect, Tango Fiesta and Verdun.
These sets of games were split up into three different areas: The main floor, which held most of the high-profile games, Rezzed, which was for nearly all of the indie titles, and the over 18’s area, which, as the name may suggest, was for the games with an 18+ rating.
We spent quite a large chunk of time perusing the titles within the Rezzed area and found quite a few gems. Notable titles are Big Pharma - a tycoon simulation where you take on the role of a pharmaceutical production company, Gang Beasts - a four player beat ‘em up which has recently gained a lot of popularity via YouTube Let’s Players, Never Alone - an adventure side scroller which is heavily focused on storytelling, and finally War of the Overworld - a spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper.
The thing that we like most about this show however, is the opportunity it gives gamers to get a hands-on opportunity with their most anticipated games, and maybe find a few new titles they didn’t even know existed!
One of these discoverable areas was the boardgames section which had a few of our staff hooked for a sizeable amount of time. Along with this, there is a merchandise section where you can pick up some of your favourite gaming apparel and figurines.
All in all, EGX 2014 was an enjoyable event and one any UK-based gamer that can, should go to. Who knows, you might find something you fall in love with!
