How to Make a House in Terraria
Every time I have been playing Terraria I always seem to get the questions like, "How do I make a house" or "why does the NPC not come to the house".
So I thought I would write these small tutorials to help explain it all.
Note: Best to do this when it's day to avoid unwanted guests at night.
- First things first is to find the land in which you’re planning on building your house. It's probably best to level out the surface of that area before building.
- Then go off and cut down some nearby trees with the axe, make sure to cut down a few trees as quite a bit of wood is needed, and with that wood, go to the inventory (Default ESC) and scroll down the crafting area until you find ‘Work Bench’. Craft it.
- Place your Work Bench into a small 2x1 hole nearby, and then stand near it. You should have new items added to the crafting area; craft the door, table, and chair.
- You may want to get a bit more wood, getting at least 150 wood blocks should be enough for the next step.
- Then go back to your desired area, and start placing the wood blocks around it, best to make a rectangle (Be sure to leave a 3 block tall sized hole to place your door, and don’t use all your blocks)
- When your wood blocks and doors are in place, go inside, and place the Table and Chair next to Each other at the other end of the house
- then, go the to work bench, and make roughly up to 100-125 wood walls
- Then, go back inside, and start placing the wood walls onto the background, make sure to not leave any gaps otherwise an NPC won’t move in.
- Last but not least, you need to place a light source in there, torches are best as there common and easy to craft. Note that any Furnace, lamp posts and disco balls do not count towards this.
- Huzzah! Your house should now be Ready for an NPC to come and live in, just remember if their house is destroyed, they will move out.

Great post mate. I've not really played much of this game and got quite confused with it (not surprising!) I'll give this a go :)
