GameGrin Interviews Phil Campbell From Motorhead, Victor Vran DLC

Recently, we got the chance to sit down with legendary Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell during the Victor Vran DLC Preview Event. Phil worked as a creative consultant on the new expansion Motörhead Through the Ages, and we chatted about what excited him about this particular project, what he actually did in it, his views on games and their legacy, and how the rock industry changed since he started decades ago. Read it all up below!

Marcello Perricone:

You were a creative consultant on this project, how hands on was your work in it?

Phil Campbell:

Initially we were approached to do the music.

Marcello Perricone:

Just licensed music?

Phil Campbell:

Yeah, and we got quite excited about it. And we got into some talks and everything, and it turns out that some of the guys and girls were Motörhead fans - which we knew, because the whole world is a Motörhead fan (smiles) - and then we put a crazy idea together to do a game, and it took off from there. It’s taken two, three or four years to get it all to where it is now. I’ve been checking our latest builds out today, and it blows my mind. It’s great. People can be me!

Marcello Perricone:

(laughs) Yeah, they can. What excited you about this? You said that when you were approached you actually got excited, was it anything they said?

Phil Campbell:

Just the soundtrack, and you put the headphones on, big screen TV and everything, and it’s just like going into another world.

Marcello Perricone:

Does it feel different being immortalised in a game as opposed to the legacy of your music and stuff?

Phil Campbell:

I’m immortalised anyway, my friend. (laughs) But no, I thought about it, and no… it’s an honour, it’s fun, and it’s really exciting, and... you know, it’s an enhancement of life. It takes stuff to another level. Just game like, you know.

Marcello Perricone:

And do you think games are relevant in any way to the world?

Phil Campbell:

Yeah, of course they are, yeah. You know, it’s an escapism. You know, it makes you think. You know, it’s real, games are real, to some extent. Depends on what you put into it. It’s all relevant.

Marcello Perricone:

After 30 years in the rock industry, how do you think it compares to today from how it was when you started?

Phil Campbell:

They say every 30 years things come back around. For me personally, you just play, you write the best music you can. You play it, you just stick true to your roots, you try working in the industry, how it is, depends if you want to make money, or if you just want to pop out, and it’s definitely changed a lot. It’s definitely changed.

When I started, the idea of having a cellphone was insane. If I wanted to see my favourite band, I would have to get a train up to London, I would phone my mother from a phonebox, and my dad would have to wake up and he’d pick me up from Cardiff, and, you know, it’s changed a lot. A good music will always live true, I think.

You know, a good, creative, anything good will live true. I believe with Victor Vran, he’s such a motherfucker, man, I wanna kick his fucking ass. There’s one thing I need, I really... I fucked over most people that have come into my path. I’ve got one left. I will kick his ass.

Marcello Perricone:

(laughs) Okay, thank you very much.

Phil Campbell:

No, seriously. You see, I’ve rode a horse on stage in front of a Testament set. It’s a great game. It’s fun, it’s great.

Marcello Perricone:

I would love to hear your stories, but your schedule is kinda busy, so...

Phil Campbell:

One day, yeah?

Marcello Perricone:

One day.

Phil Campbell:

(smiles) It’s been a pleasure, my friend.

Immediately afterwards, he hugged me, took pictures with me, and then asked Lloyd Kaufman about me, which Lloyd responded with “Yeah, that’s Marcello! He’s a dirty, dirty boy!” -- and Phil agreed, with “Yep, Marcello’s a dirty, dirty boy.”

Well done, me. Ten points to Gryffindor.

Victor Vran: Motörhead Through the Ages is out soon on Steam, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
