Game Over: Just Crow Things
I really enjoyed Rain on Your Parade, so I was excited to hear that developer Unbound Creations had released a new title with Just Crow Things. The other game had a humour style that really resonated with me, so I wanted more of that.
The game sees you controlling a crow who is leaving the nest and had something stolen from them by some tough crows. So, you give chase and travel across the world trying to get it back, which involves landing in a level and completing a certain number of objectives so that you can unlock the next one and move on.
One quest will see you returning baby squirrels to their mother, another requires smacking people with a baseball bat, and several involve pooping on folks. There are also races in every level, challenging you to reach a place or poop on the targets in a timed manner.
The most obvious thing to talk about is the controls in Just Crow Things. The main screen tells you to hold the trigger to fly — but you have to press it, then once more if you want to land. Holding the other trigger will make you dive, and thankfully, will automatically pick items up if you hit them. If you’re not flying, you pick things up by pressing a button, which also makes your crow caw. Certain objects can be used, such as spray paint and leaf blowers, which is done with another button, but dang if I didn’t just keep dropping things because I pressed the wrong one. But that’s my failing, not the game’s.
While the previous title chose an art style where everything was made out of cardboard, Just Crow Things sees everything in full 3D. The camera angle stays the same, however, with just the one view in almost every level. But given how much you’ll be swooping around, it makes sense that things would change for this one!
The levels are all well-designed and different enough from one another to prevent them from being a chore. Forests, cities, haunted mansions… anywhere a crow can live, there’s a level for it. I know that because there are crow facts on the loading screens, and they told me that crows can live anywhere humans can!
Just Crow Things is another fun title from Unbound Creations. The final level is a little lackluster, but the mediaeval level more than makes up for it. Fans of Rain on Your Parade will need to play it sooner rather than later.
