Female Leads in New & Upcoming Videogames
Some of the most popular videogames ever released have featured female protagonists. These ladies are right at the centre of all the gaming action and have all of the instincts, capabilities and skills that would make most men weep. During this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA, back in June, we saw an unprecedented number of excellent femme fatales strutting their stuff across a range of exciting new games. So we’ve been inspired to look back and pick out the best.
The Walking Dead: Michonne
TellTale Games’ excellent interactive videogame adaptation of the hit horror drama series The Walking Dead made waves back in 2012 when it impressed both gamers and critics alike thanks to its rich yet bleak sense of storytelling and it’s hard-hitting gameplay. Now one of the main characters from the show/comic book, Michonne, is set to get her very own spin-off mini-series game that will be released later this year.
The legendary and iconic heroine Lara Croft will be returning this November in Crystal Dynamics’ Rise of the Tomb Raider. Picking up from where the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider series left off, this follow-up introduces us to plenty of new ways in which to take control of the lovely Lara as she strolls through a number of exciting new adventures. The game will arrive on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One this November, with a late 2016 release due for the PS4. This popular videogame franchise began way back in 1996, and if you can’t wait for the next release then you can play the online slot with Royal Vegas in the meantime.
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
Syndicate is the latest upcoming action-adventure instalment from the ever popular Assassin’s Creed franchise, and for the first time it will allow players to assume the female lead. Evie is the twin sister of the games main male protagonist Jacob Frye, and the player will have the ability to switch between the characters as they play. The intelligent, witty and beautiful Evie will be proficient in various stealth-related scenarios and will be pretty handy with a knife.
FIFA 16
The latest offering from FIFA will finally give soccer ladies the chance to play as a female footballer. That’s right, FIFA 16, which has just hit shelves, features 12 female national sides including: England, France, Brazil, China, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain and the USA. All the famous faces from the world of international women’s football are featured in the game which is a huge deal and another great step forward for the sport.

It's good to see that in the aftermath of the ridiculousness that was GamerGate, the issue of strong and appropriate female characters in gaming is being sensibly and genuinely addressed. Games are getting far more equal and sensible in how they portay humanity's subtle differences
