Emsey's Sci-Fi TV Recommendations
Emsey Recommends:
Stargate SG-1
When it comes to the magical world of science fiction, Stargate SG-1 really is the creme de la creme of the TV shows in this genre. Incorporating a diverse medley of seemingly unrelated themes in a plausibly realistic, modern-day setting, invite you into a world which you can easily pretend exists. Space battles clash with unrequited love, and comedy holds hands with politics and religion, whilst mythology and aliens combine to produce storylines that creep into and lay claim to your heart.
Such a simple premise as a team of four mismatched people who travel through a portal to explore new worlds opens doors to present and examine fundamental aspects of the human condition in a challenging but uniquely engaging way. The characters of Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c are flawed, but winning, and their reactions to the foreign and often ludicrous situations in which they find themselves are both convincing and witty.
Spanning over 10 seasons, with a few cast changes, and two offshoot films (excepting the original it is based on), there's so much content, you'll be kept entertained for ages and ages.
If you are even the slightest bit partial to science fiction, this is an absolute must-see.
Alternatively, try:
ReGenesis
ReGenesis stands out from the majority of science fiction, due to content that whilst being accessible, isn't dumbed down for audiences. Think 24 crossed with the lab parts of CSI, and you're on the right track. It covers extremely complex biotechnology and in depth chemistry, covering issues like bioterrorism and chemical warfare, as well as the political, ethical and social aspects that surround them.
You might recognise main character, David Standstrom's daughter, as a very young Ellen Page, and she is a hint at the high calibre of actor you can expect from the show. It is one of those programmes that is very fast-paced, and you will often find yourself on the edge of your seat, and pushing that 'play next episode' button at the end of each previous one. If you like real, applied science explained in great detail, and a sense of urgency in your viewing sessions, you'll love this.
Alternatively try: Battlestar Galactica (New version)
No recommendations list for science fiction would be complete without a spaceship orientated show, and Battlestar Galactica is pretty much the best of the bunch for me. Although it is a remake of the popular original show about the epic war between humans and robots (known as cylons), its translation is outstanding and in my opinion, completely outshines its predecessor.
Still focusing on the age-old theme of man versus machine, this series essence is really held in the relationships of the characters, whether they be human or cylon. The acting in this series is probably the best of any TV show I have ever watched, and experiencing the betrayals, losses and desperate fights for survival alongside the people they portray is something that move you to your core. If you're looking for a grown-up show that will consume you and your thoughts for weeks on end, then look no further.

Sooo much love for Stargate, atlantis and universe where also really good. Such a shame universe got cancelled mind, the lack of an ending drives me up the wall. Saw the title of this and i though "best be stargate in there or hes clueless" OP delivered.

Season 1 to 5 of SG-1 was good, after that it went down the shitter and just seemed to go in circles, the less said about the spinoffs the better. The pilot for ReGenesis wasn't bad at all from what I remember, might have to give the rest of it a look. BSG is easily one of the best things ever put on TV.

By "Farscape" she means Ben Browder and Claudia Black both appeared in SG-1.

I'm currently working my way through Andromeda. It was a bit weird at first seeing Hercules in a spaceship but it's good.
