E3 2014 - Nintendo Keynote Digital Conference
The Nintendo digital conference begins with an Adult Swim intro. We are told that there will be no Mario game announced this year, to the shock of everyone. We see a rather random fight take place, involving Super Smash Bros. and a Skylanders-looking Mario being pulled into the SSB game.
Super Smash Bros
Masahiro Sakurai talks to us about Super Smash Bros. and the updates that have been made to the new game. Firstly, Miis will now be able to join in the game. They’ve not just been thrown in either, with considerable thought gone into the inclusion process and evolution of the Mii taking place. There will be new classes for the Mii: the Brawler (up close and personal), the Swordfighter (weapon masters) and the Gunner (armed with arm cannons). Each class is a unique and separate fighter and you will be able to choose four special moves out of a selection of twelve for each one, so there are thirty-six moves available in total. So now, you will be able to use Miis to add your favourite characters into the game.
This version will be coming to the Wii U and the 3DS, the latter of which is very nearly complete. There are more modes added, like sandbag-hitting and a plethora of other things. Trophies are back soon, and there are many more game elements that haven’t been introduced yet. It will be the first Smash Bros game on a handheld device and will be available on October 3rd, 2014. The Wii U version will be out in the holiday season 2014, with no official date set yet.
The Amiibo
We are now introduced to Nintendo’s new baby, the Amiibo toy. These are physical toys with a special chip that allow you to essentially add that character to your game. The figures store data which updates as you play, bringing new possibilities to gameplay. These chips will be recognisable by any Wii U, and by an attachment to be released for the 3DS.
Smash Bros will be the first game to support the Amiibo, with the feature being developed for lots of others like Mario Kart 8.
Yoshi’s Wooly World
A new Yoshi game is in development. It’s a cute 2.5D side-scrolling, action platformer game and it’s visually represented by, you guessed it, wool. This game is all about the freedom to explore and having fun while you’re doing it. His tongue is his weapon and as you walk around you swallow the yarn, making a ball behind you that follows you along. There will be a two-player mode, where you can have two Yoshis running around, you can even have one eat the other to then throw him!
It’s a surprising title, but a pleasant one, that brings a smile to your face
Yoshi’s Wooly World will be out in 2015.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
That’s right, Toad has his own game! He’ll be getting into the thick of it exploring cubular worlds, wearing a miner’s helmet and looking rather badass. The tablet of the Wii U can be used to view the world from a first-person perspective.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be out Holiday, 2014.
New Zelda Game
After some more Adult Swim, we are excited to hear about anything Zelda-related. Eiji Aonuma tells us that this project is something that they’ve wanted to do for a long time for the franchise. In the earlier versions of the game, players were able to explore a wide, scrolling 2D area, making everything seem epic and immense. However with the transition to 3D it was difficult to keep that same feeling, it seemed like the world was suddenly a lot smaller.
Well that is all about to change with the new game. This world is a vast one, an open world, full of possibilities. You can even reach the mountains looming in the background if you want to. They’ve not been able to make anything like this before, but now you can approach your goals from any given direction, making the possibilities for gameplay almost limitless. Now, part of the puzzle is how you get there. Everything looks visually amazing and open, we can’t wait.
The new game is coming in 2015.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Another re-release here as these two Pokémon titles receive the remake treatment to find their way onto your 3DS.
Bayonetta 2
We see someone being dragged to hell and at the gates, we see her. “Welcome to Hell, love” she says. It’s Bayonetta. She’s back and ready to kick some butt. We see some brief footage of her taking out some monsters, with of course some huge monstrosities obviously in there for your gaming pleasure. There will be bonus costumes too, like Link and Samus Aran. Bayonetta as Link? Cool stuff.
Hyrule Warriors
Hisashi Koinuma, Yoshuke Jayashie, Eiji Aonuma have combined forces and as a result are producing, Hyrule Warriors, which is a mixture of the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors. We are told that the team was quite nervous about getting a chance to work on this series. You can do whatever you like here, with huge battles taking place simultaneously across the maps.
The world has some great big bosses for you to tackle and you need to think hard about how exactly to defeat them. You can play with two players on the Wii U, with one on the TV and one on the tablet, which means co-op without the split-screen. There are lots of memorable characters in this game, and you should get to see them all!
Hyrule Warriors is out September 26th, 2014.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
A new Kirby game is here, where you control Kirby via the gamepad on the Wii U and the stylus on the 3DS, by drawing lines of yarn or clay. With a unique art style, this looks like a fun, quirky title. And who doesn’t love Kirby right?!
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is coming in 2015.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
A new mishmash, sci-fi is up now, with a lovely Japanese art style. A woman named Elma appears and we find out that they have lost Earth. We see a lot of animé characters and mechs fighting everywhere. It looks pretty damn good.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming in 2015.
Mario Maker
Introducing, Mario Maker. You can now create your own custom Mario courses. It will feature the original 8-bit style, with all the old, original sprites etc. You can then port you levels and they can be played in the new or old Mario style.
Mario Maker is coming in 2015.
Splatoon
There is paint everywhere. We see something swimming through the paint, it’s a girl. There is lots of paint just being fired everywhere. It’s a new title called Splatoon, an eight-player, 4v4 online action game. The teams will battle to claim their turf by painting the landscape.
The characters were created especially for the game, to fit the concept perfectly. The players can switch between being a squid and a person. You can only shoot ink as a player, but as a squid you can move a lot faster. You walk slowly through the paint of your enemies and fast through your own.
As a person, your priority is to keep shooting out that ink and then the squids can use it to their advantage. You use the pad to look around and for an overhead view that shows a real-time view of the ink coverage, adding a new layer of strategy. There are lots of different ways to play the game and it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun to try out!
Splatoon is coming in 2015.
And with that, the Nintendo broadcast is over.
