Diary of an NPC - Entry Six

You play the main character in every game - the plot revolves around your every moment in the game like as unto a god. Of course, this means you ignore what's going on with the people around who you're controlling. The people who drive around, go in and out of stores and generally live their lives. But did you realise there are a limited number of so-called NPCs? To do their jobs in all of these games, especially the heavily-populated ones, they need to be able to come and go as they please. These people don’t think it’s odd to go from deep space to a land of dinosaurs in the space of a week - it’s their way of life. In this series, we follow one of these people - Nigel Philip Charles. Escaping from Rome in the 16th century, he has gone into hiding from the man in the hood - choosing Midgar as his destination.

Day of Arrival

They call this place Sector 7 - I don't think these people are very smart. I'd call this Taft. Because it's a mess - really run down and the place I'm staying doesn't have any locks on the doors. See? Just like World War II when he was president and you could leave your doors unlocked? And it was run down because of war? I know - genius.

Apparently this isn't Sector 7... It's the Sector 7 slums. Still - Taft slums is easier to say. Though the city is Midgar - heck why not name the sections after the Greek pantheon like Thor and Krishna?

Some blonde-haired guy just stole my Potion! He just walked in and took it - didn't talk to me, just walked over to my cupboard and took it. Then he looked in the trash and my drawers but didn't take anything... I'd have stopped him, but he had a sword bigger than ME. Man, I was saving that Potion...

Apparently there's a theme park not too far away! This guy Wedge told me about the Gold Saucer. There's monsters in the wild, so I'm taking the bus.

Gotta say - the bus was not the fastest way... But I saw the chocobo farm, which was pretty cool. Big ostrich-sized things that people race. Might also make into chicken wings - I didn’t see the whole facility.

Gold Saucer is AWESOME! Sure it’s a three day ride by bus, but since I’m staying here for a couple of days it’s not all bad. I’m staying in Ghost Square - a themed hotel. Spent all day in Wonder Square and played on the arcade games. There’s one that’s a bike and it’s super realistic - it’s awesome! I also got a fortune from a fortune telling moogle with a cat on it’s back. Animatronics or something, I think. Anyway - it read “Sucks to be you” - which was kinda mean… But I’m having a great time.

I went on Round Square - an oddly-named ferris wheel - today, and also saw a play. The view from the wheel was great - I went on in the morning and again tonight just to see everything in the day and at night. The play was quite terrible… Some rubbish plot and really bad acting. But it’s not like they have a multiplex here. They do, however, have Chocobo Square, where the racers race. And Battle Square, but things got real very fast there… I just want to forget about that… The racing was fun, until I blew my 300 gold point (park money) budget.

My house got flattened! Not like a bulldozer - the entire Sector 7 dropped onto it! It was on the news, some terrorist group called AVALANCHE (their capitals, not mine) caused an explosion and the part of the city that was held over my home in the slums dropped down. Sure other people were affected or died or whatever, but what the hell? Literally all my stuff was there, except for the clothes I brought with me… Though it’s not like my Potion was there…

So I’m being kicked out of Ghost Square… They don’t care that I have nowhere to go. And as Midgar is probably all going to drop on all the rest of it, I won’t risk going back there. I’ll go to Ferelden. A little bit medieval, but at least a city won’t drop on me… How bad could it be?
