DayZ Diary - Entry One
Dear Diary,
Where to start. I suppose the logical place would be at the beginning.
I hear the crash of waves hitting against the shore. My hands come into focus and as I look around, I realise I am alive. I am a survivor.
The sun is high, luckily for me and as I search my pack, I see all I have is the bare minimum: 1x Torch (no batteries), 1x bandage and 1x pack of painkillers. I knew I had to find weaponry and a source of sustenance to keep alive so I set off along the shore. It wasn’t long before I ran into trouble.
After a few minutes of jogging along the shore, I came across a train yard. I couldn’t see any activity and so slowly ventured in. I came across a decaying building, littered with empty whiskey bottles and old rusty cans. It looked like nobody had been through here in months. The paint was peeling from the wall and I could hear the subtle buzz of flies nearby. Despite its look, flies would usually indicate a recent kill. I noticed a staircase to my right and crept slowly up them, constantly peering over my shoulder to make sure I was indeed, alone.
I peered into a few rooms but could see nothing but more cans and bottles. The last room I stumbled across, I found another survivor, sadly he was sprawled out in the center of the room quite obviously dead. I took my time slowly creeping towards him. I searched his pack but nothing of any use except a single can of soda. I pocketed it and turned to leave but as I turned, I heard it. THe unquestionable groan of an infected shuffling up the corridor. I was trapped, doomed to face the same fate as the poor bastard stinking up the room.
I lay flat on my stomach and wriggled my way towards the door. I allowed myself to lean out of the doorway so only my left ear and eye were in the corridor. There it was, lazily walking up the corridor. I shot back, heart beating, palm sweating, swearing that if I made it out of this god forsaken building that I’d build a church and defend it from this horde and lay my head against the wall, the wallpaper disintegrating under the pressure.
I could hear the infected inches from me on the other side of the wall as I cowered there trying to decide how to get around this beast. Right then I decided to run for it, I had seen a small army base camp about a mile or so away just inside the tree line. If I could just get to there, I’m sure I could find something to protect myself with. I stood up and readied myself to survive at all costs. A groan, a shuffle, a slurp, a glimpse of a decaying foot slid into view and then a shot rang out, bouncing off every surface and finally finding my ears. The infected fell through the doorway and onto the carpet, a dark reddish stain forming on its left shoulder.
Whilst I was computing what had just happened; the tip of a rifle poked through the doorway, followed by a woman dressed head to toe in camouflage. She crouched down, searched the infected, found nothing, turned on her heels and left silently. She didn’t so much as blink an eyelid at me cowering in the corner.
Not knowing if she was friend or foe, I stayed put for a good few minutes before composing myself, standing up and leaving the house without so much as the slightest glance back.
The light outside hit me and my vision blurred slightly. As my eyes adjusted, I said outloud to myself “Time to build a church, I suppose”.
