Captilight - Studio Spotlight
That initial spark of passion to forge a project is fuelled by inspiration; and inspiration can come in many forms, from multiple sources.
For the Founder and Creative Director of the independent game studio Captilight, Deana Galbraith discovered said spark in Journey - the 2012 adventure sensation of which has been immortalised as one of the all-time greats in the indie game sphere.
“I loved the idea of a game that challenged the status quo…” states Deana about her time spent with Journey, “A game that was non-violent, had breathtaking graphics, and gives me the feels?! Heck ya, I’m in!”
And in those ideologies found in her playthrough of Journey, laid the foundations of which Captilight and their debut release - “Path of Kami” has been built upon.
Path of Kami is a 3D puzzle/exploration game about a wolf traversing between the mortal and spirit realms, the relationship between them and their mother, the impermanence of life, acceptance of death, and cherishing the connections made with those along the way.
Just from the premise alone, Path of Kami is charged with overwhelmingly emotional themes - and if the title or aesthetics didn’t hint to the game's atmosphere, Kami is inspired by traditional Japanese folktales (namely Issun-Bōshi & Momotarō).
Evident in their commitment to tell passionate stories, the folks at Captilight aim to be a beacon of representation for women and trans people in the game development scene, reflecting the diversity of the gaming audience as a whole.
The team at Captilight are crowdfunding the final stages of Path of Kami on the platform iFundWomen; of which uses 20% of their fundraising fees to pay it forward to other female creatives and entrepreneurs.
