Can You Play The Plucky Squire on the ROG Ally?

Some games really hit the spot when you're curled up on the couch or bed cuddling up with a pet or spouse, and The Plucky Squire is definitely one of them! Unfortunately, it isn't always possible to run the games smoothly, and my main worry when going into the game was the 3D sections, which look absolutely stunning, would lag my poor ROG Ally (dubbed "Roggie" in my household).

Originally, I had intended to play the game on PC because I have a super ultrawide OLED, and considering how colourful The Plucky Squire is, I thought it would be the best option. Unfortunately, it didn't support the 32:9 ratio, and the game didn't have cloud save yet (keep in mind all of this was during pre-release), so I ended up choosing the ROG Ally.

Since I got to play almost up to the second chapter on my PC, I was a bit worried about the lag spikes and stuttering, as my specs are an RTX 4060 and an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G; I thought it was a clear sign it wouldn't work on the ROG. Thankfully, when I went to the room to try it out, I found out that the game would lag in the same exact spots on both platforms! This isn't something to worry about (at least, I don't think so) since the developer will most likely be able to patch it up easily. Again, this was all pre-release! That being said, it's hard to tell if some of the lag spikes might've been the game not running well on the ROG Ally (particularly during a section where you have to run from dinosaurs), but even if so, it was a rare occurrence that didn't ruin my experience.

For anyone who is concerned they'll be missing out on the ROG's smaller screen, I'm here to tell you that I didn't feel that was the case! It was comfortable to understand everything happening in-game, and while there's obviously an upside to playing it on a larger screen, I still felt like I could absorb all of the game's glory! Even the sound was fantastic, as the narrator's voice came through clearly.

All in all, I think The Plucky Squire is a title that can be comfortably enjoyed on the ROG Ally, and it's no surprise, as it will release Steam-Deck-Verified! If you'd like to learn more about how my experience with the game went, feel free to check out my review!
