5 Great Songs From Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE was one of the best games on the Wii U and now its Encore is finally here on Nintendo Switch for all to enjoy. While the game is built to be a crossover of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem, the game has a strong identity of its own, drenched in Japanese pop culture and specifically that of idol culture and music. With that, I decided it was high time I gave you a list of the best five songs performed by the main cast throughout the game so you can fulfil your Jpop desires and maybe add a few to your playlists.
Kiria Kurono - Reincarnation
KOWASHITAI - the first word you’ll hear as vocalist and fictional pop sensation Kiria delivers this pop-rock banger in the very opening seconds of the game. Reincarnation is the perfect anime opening song and sets the pace for the rest of the game incredibly well. Not only is this the opener but Kiria performs it live for the people of Shibuya in front of the iconic 109 building, complete with holographic meteorites falling from the skies while she belts out the chorus, “Reincarnation, realisation, reincarnation, I want to disappear.”
Kiria Kurono - The Labyrinth
The second Kiria track on this list is just as good, if not better than the first. The Labyrinth is a song all about Kiria who is often seen as an ice queen, tired of being sad and trapped within her mind. After making friends with the main characters, Kiria starts to see that people will accept her for who she is and Labyrinth is part of her journey of self-acceptance.
Not only is this a big part of Kiria’s character development throughout the game but this is one of the first “ad-lib performance” attacks you will get to use. When you use ice magic occasionally Kiria will combine her emotions with that of her mirage, dark mage Tharja from Fire Emblem: Awakening to deliver extra damage.
Eleonora Yumizuru & Tsubasa Oribe - Dream☆Catcher
This electronic dance beat is a duet between new idol on the block Tsubasa Oribe and half-Japanese, half-Scandinavian actress Eleonora Yumizuru. The most fun track on the list, the music video for Dream☆Catcher is just as entertaining, showing Eleonora and Tsubasa floating through space amidst an 80’s light show of various gaudy designs as they try to touch the moon.
Dream☆Catcher is not just a fun pop song but also a lethal “Duo-Art” of the almighty element. This will hit enemies for almighty damage while also healing the party. There are many Duo-Arts in the game and are well worth planning your team around to make the most of these essential battle techniques.
Tiki - Not A Mirage World
Originally in Fire Emblem, Tiki is the last of the divine dragons and has an ongoing relationship with series icon Marth. In Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Tiki has also taken on the form of a Hatsune Miku-like Vocaloid program, a popular music creation tool in Japan where you can write songs and the program will perform them.
This sad song is the result of music producer Tiki=Waifu after our heroes save her inner performa from the evil demon Cervantes. This allows Tiki=Waifu to regain her amazing music production skills but also to meet Tiki herself in person.
While Tiki was never playable in the original game, she can now join you in combat thanks to the Encore version.
Mamori Minamoto - The Tunnel Home
While this song isn’t particularly special and is incredibly child-like what matters is how hilarious young Mamori’s trip home is. Joined by her faithful dog, 35-year-old Barry Goodman, The Tunnel Home details the monsters encountered on her journey.
The Tunnel Home is also a Duo-Art which features Barry in a full dog suit on all fours with an axe in his mouth. The reason why The Tunnel Home is on this list is that seeing a grown man fully acting like a dog and attacking as a dog all for the sake of a girl that’s not even in high school is ridiculous and fantastic.
