10 Cosy Witch Games I Can't Wait to Play
As a humongous fan of Halloween who starts counting down in August and celebrating in September, I keep track of anything witchy or spooky to do in my favourite month. Thankfully, it's become a much more common theme, so there are tons to choose from! For this list, I'll only focus on games that I haven't played and that will be available to play this October. Starting with…
Mind Over Magic
- Genres: Colony Sim, Management
- Developer: Sparkypants
- Publisher: Klei Publishing
- Status: Early Access
Despite how careful I am not to miss out on any upcoming Halloween/witch-themed games, I still managed to find a few new ones that had gone under my radar, and Mind Over Magic is one of them! In this building and management title, we get to build the magic school of our dreams as we help the students survive the terrifying fog that consumes everything! Manage the classes and schedules, use all sorts of powerful potions and spells, and explore the labyrinth for rewards!
REKA
- Genres: Single-player, Adventure
- Developer: Emberstorm Entertainment
- Publisher: Fireshine Games
- Status: Releases on the 12th of September
I've been excited about REKA for years now; I even had an interview with the developer, which pumped me that much more! In it, we play as a customisable witch who is Baba Yaga's apprentice as we set off on a journey chock-full of magic, quests, and resource collecting. This continues to be like a dream come true, as I can't wait to decorate my own chicken-legged cottage!
Spellcaster University
- Genres: Colony Sim, Deckbuilding
- Developer: Sneaky Yak Studios
- Publisher: Sneaky Yak Studios, WhisperGames
- Status: Out now
Spellcaster University takes a more personalised approach to the building aspect, as depending on what magic you choose to teach, you'll get access to a specific deck that'll help you mould your academy and journey. Just like in Mind Over Magic, there's a tinge of survival gameplay here, as you'll have to keep the darkness at bay! Care for your students, build your university according to your style, make friends and enemies of factions, and bulk up so you can win against the darkness!
Potionomics
- Genres: Deckbuilding, Shop Simulator
- Developer: Voracious Games
- Publisher: XSEED Games, Marvelous USA, Inc.
- Status: Out now
While I feel comfortable playing management titles, shop simulators aren't my strong suit: I'm terrible at managing the money, and I get a bit overwhelmed at setting prices! That being said, I can't help but think this might be the title to get me started in the genre, as Potionomics seems so comedic and charming! In it, we play as Sylvia as she tries to manage the store her uncle left for her after an untimely death! The game offers shop customisation, haggling, and potion crafting!
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
- Genres: Narrative, Choices Matter
- Developer: Deconstructeam
- Publisher: Devolver Digital
- Status: Out now
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood moves away from the gameplay-heavy and lighthearted themes I usually gravitate towards as a spooky fan, as in it, we play as a fortune-telling witch who gets condemned to exile on an asteroid after making a pact with a forbidden creature. As Fortuna, we'll meet old and new friends, use our cards to see their past and futures, and unravel a political plot.
Mika and the Witch's Mountain
- Genres: Adventure
- Developer: Chibig, Nukefist
- Publisher: Chibig
- Status: Early Access
I backed Mika and the Witch's Mountain during their Kickstarter campaign, and while I can't wait to try it out, I'll be waiting until the Early Access period is over, but I wanted to share it with others! This charming and colourful adventure title has us playing as an aspiring little witch as she delivers mail for the townfolks on her magic broom. Explore the island, protect and deliver the packages, and collect all sorts of fun stuff, from outfits to treasures!
The Cauldron Kids: The Summoning of Mr. Vermicelli
- Genres: Short, Adventure
- Developer: Pet Golem Games
- Publisher: Pet Golem Games
- Status: Out now
While I'm not the biggest fan of short games (I hate being left wanting for more adventuring!), I couldn't help but add The Cauldron Kids: The Summoning of Mr. Vermicelli to the list because it has such a cute premise! In it, we play as a six-year-old witch who attempts to bring her frog plushie to life while playing with her sister during a day home alone. I couldn't miss out on this heartwarming adventure as an all-things Halloween and frog fan!
WitchHand
- Genres: 4X, Deckbuilding
- Developer: Jon Nielsen
- Publisher: HopFrog
- Status: Out now
Okay, so I have quite a few management games on the list, but there are just too many good ones! I'm particularly excited about WitchHand, though, because it looks unlike anything I've ever played, and I'm currently in a frenzy for card games! In this title, we play as a witch (shocker, right?) who is leading her coven through new territory. By using the cards we find, we get to expand our colony, and whenever we're not working on that, we get to befriend or fight other covens, collect familiars, or just play in Peaceful Mode and relax!
Little Witch Nobeta
- Genres: Action-adventure
- Developer: Pupuya Games
- Publisher: Pupuya Games, SimonCreative, Justdan
- Status: Out now
Little Witch Nobeta is probably one of the most action-heavy titles in today's list! This 3D action shooting title lets us use our magic to explore ancient castles while solving puzzles and surviving challenging battles. I'm quite excited about it as it looks very hands-on in its combat, and there seems to be a nice variety of spells and styles to explore!
Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time
- Genres: RPG
- Developer: APLUS Co., Ltd
- Publisher: BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment
- Status: Out now
And last but absolutely not least, Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time! I barely knew anything about the game, but the few screenshots I got to see at first glance hooked me because the game looks so humorous! I was surprised to find out that this side-scroller is based on an anime of the same name (minus "Chamber of Time"), so there's not a lot of information on the gameplay itself, but we know we get to explore dungeons, cast spells, and solve the mystery of the shift in time! This is one of the games I'm most excited about, and I'm thrilled to find out it has an anime. Time to get cosy while I watch & play all things Little Witch Academia!
That's it for the games I can't wait to try out this year! I hope I helped you find some new titles that might've gone under your radar. See you next year with a whole new list (hopefully!).
