Flix and Chill 2: Millennials Review

Flix and Chill 2: Millennials Review

Flix and Chill 2: Millennials is a scenario based romance simulator and is the sequel to viral sensation Flix and Chill.

Players take on the role of a millennial in a variety of environments from clubs, coffee shops, art galleries and an office. The visual style is simplistic and colourful, the characters all use the same base but have different skin tones, hair and clothes, providing enough variety to ensure no two characters look the same. The accompanying music is relaxed and sets a good pace for the game, unfortunately this is where the good points end.

There are a total of four scenarios that take a maximum of 30 minutes to complete. This would be fine, however, there is very little to actually do in each scenario. Most of the time playing will be spent tapping spacebar and reading dialogue that for the most part offers no player engagement. When a dialogue choice does present itself the game will offer the illusion of choice. I played the same scenario through multiple times and there are far too many moments that a different dialogue choice will yield the exact same result or offer dialogue that is phrased ever so slightly differently than the other choices.

In order get a date there is a hidden point system behind the scenes so that when a correct dialogue choice is selected the scenario will end with a date. This simply boils down to agreeing with everything that the potential partner says. While some scenarios offer multiple characters to woo some only have one that makes replayability very limited. When successful in getting a date I had the pleasure of seeing a short cutscene of my millennial change their status from single to in a relationship on Facelook, the very cleverly named parody of Facebook.

The title is plagued with poorly written stereotyped characters that speak as if the writer has never experienced any real human interaction before. This leads to moments that are hilariously comical rather than deep and meaningful as intended. The game handles female characters especially poorly, with most of them coming across as the stereotypical high school bitch that takes advantage of men or who are in need of a male figure to come to their defence. The game has a variety of characters from different backgrounds, however, the writing makes all of the protagonists feel as if they all view the world from the same perspective forcing them to lose any sense of uniqueness. The title attempts to highlight the difficulties young professionals face in the workplace and in their personal lives, tackling big issues such as identity and unfair working conditions. Unfortunately because of the poor writing the game actually undermines the message it attempts to deliver, making the title feel more like a satire of the very thing it is trying to defend.

Flix and Chill 2: Millennials attempts to give an insight into millennial culture and issues that affect the younger generation. Instead the game either misses its own point or is just comical in its delivery. There is very little game here. It is possible to finish in under two hours and with the lack of any mechanics, other than dialogue choices that may or may not even yield a different result, Flix and Chill 2: Millennials feels very lackluster.

The game is unenjoyable, but it works.
